You need wine, beer, cheeses and all sorts of additional pieces to make all the entertaining that you have planned go as perfectly as you imagine.

I don"t want to go on too long, but for those of you who have asked, we had a wonderful trip to Switzerland, and, YES, the snow fell three nights all night long and the Alps were glorious! If you haven"t seen the picture of our grandson on our Facebook page with a Salmanzar (9 liters!) of Steininger Grand Gru Gruner Veltliner, then take a look. It will definitely bring a smile to your face!

Kate says the Christmas goods are going fast and her selection this year is getting raves. Don"t wait!!

Jenny Wagner is the newest member of the Wagners to join the family business as a winemaker.
Emmolo is named after Jenny’s maternal family, and was launched twenty years ago by her mother, Cheryl Emmolo. 
Jenny has been working alongside her father, Chuck Wagner founder of Caymus, for the past few years, benefiting from hands-on learning of both grape farming and winemaking in the Napa Valley. 

Forget what you thought about Merlot, this wine breaks all those paradigms!

Grapes for this wine were sourced from Napa Valley’s Oak Knoll district, which includes two family vineyards. The area"s cooler weather, along with crop thinning and gravelly light soil, creates ideal conditions for producing a rich, distinctive Merlot. This wine is lush and supple on the palate, with expansive, dark berry flavors, a fresh earthiness, and smooth, leathery tannins.

A bit about Emmolo...... 

Jenny Wagner daughter of Chuck Wagner has taken the reins of Emmolo (EM – oh – low) Winery from her mother, Cheryl Emmolo, the owner and founder of this lovely Rutherford estate.

Jenny Wagner"s family has a long-standing history in Napa Valley beginning with her great-grandfather, Italian immigrant, Salvatore Emmolo, who planted grapevines and started a grapevine rootstock nursery in Rutherford in the 1920s. He grew and sold phylloxera-resistant vines – the same "resistant" vines that saved the wine industry from the devastating vinifera louse of the late 19th century. His son, Frank Emmolo, ran Emmolo Nursery and built a strong following among Napa Valley grape growers, becoming the leading supplier to Napa Valley vintners for five decades.

After becoming established grape growers, the Emmolos opened up Palermo Winery in 1934, named after the city from which they emigrated. The winery operated for less than a decade, closing due to the public"s lack of interest in wine. As things worked out, the family sustained the land over the years and tossed their hat into the ring again, with Cheryl Emmolo establishing the building as Emmolo Winery. Now Jenny Wagner will continue the family legacy of farming vines and making Emmolo wine in the original winery built by her great grandfather in 1934. 


Production and Style:

Merlot is a variety that requires hands-on manipulation in the vineyard to make a rich, concentrated wine. Crop thinning throughout the growing season leads to a low yield of rich, concentrated fruit. Grapes are sourced from Emmolo Oak Knoll, which includes two vineyards, one of which my grandfather Frank Emmolo purchased in 1972. On an average summer day, Oak Knoll is about 7 degrees cooler than Rutherford, allowing for a longer "hang time" than in warmer areas, which means that we can push the grapes to full ripeness. Harvest came in early to mid-October, and the combination of cooler weather, crop thinning and gravely light soil created ideal conditions for producing a rich, distinctive Merlot.

TASTING NOTES:  He made you breakfast in bed. Boysenberry and Luxardo cherry syrup over french toast. Someone from the party left a bag of Norwegian shag. Your post-breakfast hankering to raid the fridge, throw all the fresh mint, basil, and bay laurel over the sheets and tussle again is disrupted by the carnal satisfaction of smoking right here in the rain softened sunlight.

Dedicato Contessa Carola Prosecco, Extra Dry $14.99
Pale straw yellow with greenish hues.
Bouquet: Fragant floral and fruity perfumes with pleasant hints of golden apple and candied fruits.
Taste: Crisp, medium-bodied, harmonious with a delicious aromatic after-taste.
Food Pairings: Ideal for the whole meal and excellent as an aperitif.

Gavi DOCG, Commune di Gavi $16.99
Cortese di Gavi, or simply Gavi, is an Italian dry white wine produced in a restricted area of the Province of Alessandria, Piedmont, close to the Ligurian border. The name derives from Gavi, the comune at the centre of its production zone, and Cortese, the local variety of grape from which it is exclusively made and whose existence is reported from the 17th century. The current style of production dates to 1876.
Cortese di Gavi made from vines within the comune of Gavi may be labeled Gavi di Gavi.

Rosso Gandinaia Syrah, Tenuta ColomBarola $19.99
COLOUR: bright ruby-red with slight garnet highlights.
AROMA: slightly dried black berries (marasca cherry, elderberry, blueberry and blackcurrant) with a pleasant hint of wild strawberries. Floral scents (pinks, violets, dried red rose) with overtones of aromatic golden-leaf tobacco, liquorice and a balsamic pepper mix. A perfectly integrated and pleasant vanilla and oaky aroma.
FLAVOUR: a good structure, elegant and well-balanced alcohol, softness and acidity; pleasant and round with intense, soft tannins well blended into the structure. The aftertaste starts off reminiscent of black fruits and golden-leaf tobacco, and closes with a long, rich finish of vanilla and spice.

Arbos Sangiovese, Famiglia Castellani $12.99

Ruby red colour, typical Sangiovese-based wine with intense aromas of dark fruits, strawberries, plums and violet.

Gattinara Anziuino $23.99
Our wines come from the hills formed on the fossil rocks of the Supervulcano of the Sesia, at the foot of Monte Rosa. Rather warm summers and accentuated temperature changes, favor a microclimate suitable to preserve and enhance the organoleptic characteristics of the Nebbiolo. The history of the hills of Gattinara began 300 million years ago when the only continent (Pangea) was dotted with volcanoes. In what is now the area of the Valsesia, an immense eruption formed a 15 km diameter volcano. When Africa broke away from South America colliding with Europe, the Alps arose, and in the area that includes the Valsesia, a withdrawal of the Earth"s crust was created and the deepest parts of the crust went up at the Insubric line. Thanks to this process we can now observe what was the earth"s crust under the volcano, to a depth of about 25 km: you can see it along the Valsesia, from Balmuccia to Gattinara, a unique situation in the world. In soils with unique characteristics Nebbiolo is giving one of its best and most unique expressions.



The Beer Shelves.......


Well the Holiday season of giving is upon us! So we gave ourselves a shop full of wonderful beer! The good news is we are full stocked with lots of seasonal and holiday beers; the bad news most of these beers are already gone from the brewery and no longer available as they have moved on to mid-winter production of great brews. So if Christmas beers and ales are of interest to you or are planned as a gift for someone special, best come on in while the selection is still great. Cheers!

New from Peak Organic Brewing Portland, ME

Stone Enjoy By 12 25 2017 Unfiltered IPA: For this version of Stone Enjoy By IPA they thought: “We don’t always have a filter, so why should our beer?” By skipping a step and letting this devastatingly fresh, golden-hued double IPA go un filtered, the beer takes on a hazy appearance and its peach and tropical fruit hop aroma are intensified. So though it may sound like it, this missed step was no misstep. Delicious!

Bouffon - This collaboration with Jester King Brewery is the first in the series of collaboration beers entitled Foeders with Friends. This 5.3% ABV sour wit ale is brewed with orange peel, coriander, and spices before being aged in an oak foeder.

Schlafly Tasmanian IPA - One of the most sought after releases of the year is back to brighten up your winter! Tasmanian was one of the first widely released American IPAs to feature Australian Galaxy hops and it has developed quite a cult following along with extremely high ratings. This batch landed under lastweek so expect a really bright, fresh aroma of tropical pineapple and citrus.

Schlafly Stout Bout Variety Box - Next up Schlafly’s rotating variety pack series is the Stout Bout Box, featuring 3 bottles each of four different stouts: their delicious year-round Oatmeal Stout, Salted Caramel Stout, Mexican Chocolate Stout, and Blueberry Coffee Stout. A perfect gift for the Stout lover! (Beer that is!)

Scaldis Noel- One of the great Belgian Christmas ales that comes in at a sneaky 12% ABV is golden brown and slightly hazy with a frothy beige head. The bouquet is impressive, with smooth alcohol, honey, and cracked pepper notes that all vie for attention. The flavor sinks deep into the tongue with toffee and honey sweetness, followed by raisin and plum fruitiness. Hops come to the surface as peppery spice and assertive bitterness. Overall, with its array of flavor, from the sweet and fruity to spicy and bitter, this beer is very well balanced.
