Michael Downey Imports
CHEERS!!!
A family-run & regionally-operating wine company since 1998, Michael R. Downey Selections (“Downey Selections”) is based in Virginia and also services DC & Maryland. We import wine directly from high-quality Italian producers and we also distribute a selection of renowned French wines, with exciting artisanal additions from Spain, Uruguay, Germany, California, & Oregon.
Founder Michael Downey worked in various realms of the Washington DC-area wine business for nearly 30 years, until his death in 2002. Michael always looked for producers who practice an “enlightened traditional approach": whose wines offer regional typicity with a reasonable price/quality ratio. The search invariably begins with finding special individuals behind individual wines. Most of the estates that Downey Selections represents are quite small (and usually family-run). In some cases, the wines are little-known abroad (or very rare). All of our producers enjoy a particularly high reputation within their respective regions.
Over the years, the Downey family repeatedly visited most of the major wine-producing areas of the world (particularly Italy & France; even adding a Frenchman to their family"s composition along the way), which enabled them to cultivate a personal and enduring relationship with each wine producer. In turn, many of our producers come to the U.S. each year to support the market: visiting customers, holding winemaker dinners, & educating sales teams.
Carrying on the tradition of top quality wines & personal service, Downey Selections continues its enthusiastic mission under Downey family ownership, managed by Michael’s wife Peg, son Brennan, daughter Shannon, & son-in-law Guillaume... alongside our dynamic team!
We look forward to seeing you in person or briefly at the curb, if you decide to make it a quick stop!
