Dear Subscriber

Tomorrow is National Do Something Nice Day

Each year on October 5, people across the nation observe National Do Something Nice Day.

National Do Something Nice Day is very similar to National Random Acts of Kindness Day, which is celebrated on February 17.

It would be ideal if everyone lived their lives doing kind things on a daily basis and without thinking about it. Today serves as a reminder to us all, as it is easy to get caught up with hectic schedules and fast-paced lifestyles, to stop for a moment and do something nice.

“Real generosity is doing something nice for someone who will never find out.” ~
Frank A. Clark

Syrah 2016 Columbia Valley, Washington

90% Syrah, 4% Grenache, 4% Mourvèdre, 2% Viognier (co-fermented with Syrah)

WHOO...WHOO "s ready for a Beautiful Syrah!?!

While this bottle may educate you about the  quality of Syrah coming out of the Columbia Valley, the finesse and balance brought to this Châteauneuf-du-Pape recipe bottling by two of the Rhone Valleys Top "Pundits" Michel Gassier and Philippe Cambie, will convince you of the value of collaboration.

90 Points! The Wine Enthusiast!
Pinches of Grenache (4%), Mourvèdre (4%) and Viognier (2%) round out this wine, providing lovely accents. The aromas show notes of flower, orange peel, raspberry candy, dried herb and cherry. The palate is full bodied and rich, with the tannins bringing some grip. Raspberry notes linger on the finish.

Our Thoughts.....

The Pundit showcases the richness and depth of Columbia Valley Syrah fruit.
Showing dark fruit with notes of forest floor, spice, and roasted meat, this is a nicely focused, fruit forward wine with an attractive chewy texture and long, pure finish. Excellent value.
10% whole cluster fermented, aged 12 months in tightly grained French oak, with a small percentage unoaked.

Their story in their words….

Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Head Winemaker Bob Bertheau and his Washington team, along with Rhône valley collaborators, winemaker Michel Gassier and enology consultant Philippe Cambie, have combined their experience to produce two wines: Tenet GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre) and The Pundit Syrah. Philippe and Michel provide expertise and use local techniques honed through centuries of experience with Rhône grapes in their birthplace, while the Chateau Ste. Michelle team provides expert knowledge of Washington fruit and the best in modern winemaking techniques. The combination of the two approaches produces wines that are balanced and vibrant and have a true sense of place. The goal is to break the old paradigms and have people look at Syrah and other Rhône varieties in a new light, leaving old prejudices behind. They share the strong belief (or “tenet”) that Syrah and its Rhône brethren can thrive in the Columbia Valley.

In addition, Gassier has crafted a companion wine, Le Fervent, from the Costières de Nîmes AOC of the Rhône Valley. Offering wines from both regions, the aim is to show their respective character and their common excellence. STYLISTIC GOAL

The goal with these wines is to exhibit the growing regions by letting the opulence and vibrancy of the varieties shine through while maintaining finesse and balance. Rhône Valley techniques for managing vine canopy and cluster size in the vineyard, and minimal use of new oak, delicate and precise handling of the fruit, fermentation with stems and extended maceration in the winery all help to accomplish this goal.

From vineyards grown at a similar latitude to the Northern Rhône, a region where French winemakers have mastered the art of terroir expression, the sand over basalt terroir is the perfect situation to make wines with a lot of finesse and balance, rather than just power. Favoring larger sizes and once-used barrels for aging, the oak print is kept to a minimum, leaving room for the minerality to shine through.

Cooler vineyard sites were selected, canopy size and load were adjusted, and grapes were hand-harvested to include whole clusters. The winemaking team then embarked on long macerations, reduced vineyard stress and used various techniques to ensure smaller clusters. This effort led to grapes with more concentrated flavors, without the decadence and intensity that result from more traditional domestic Rhône varietals.

The Chateau Ste. Michelle winemaking team also applied techniques perfected by Philippe. All grapes at Chateau Ste. Michelle are subjected to rigorous sorting and are treated with the utmost care. Inclusion of stems in fermentation, however, provides very specific and unique characteristics that are certainly a departure from more fruit–driven Chateau Ste. Michelle wines, as is the use of extended maceration. These techniques lead to increased complexity and a different expression of terroir. Their employment, followed by minimal handling of the wine in barrel and the increased use of neutral oak and large format barrels preserves these different characters all the way to the bottle.

This Cabernet is delicious with flavors of black cherry flambé, mocha, mushroom, and plum.
The finish is subtle and elegant, complex and concentrated.

Director"s Cut Zinfandel, Dry Creek $20.99
A Zinfandel that pushes the envelope of decadence with voluptuous, concentrated flavors of fruit jam, chocolate and vanilla. Small amounts of Petite Sirah are added to the blend to create a sturdier structure and more complexity.

The Beers!!

Center of The Universe OktoberFest 4 pack $13.99

Center of the Universe’s Oktoberfest is our take on the classic Munich fest biers. German Munich and Vienna malts are used to give the beer a slightly sweet and malty flavor with some toasted notes as well. Noble German hops were added during the boil, adding just enough bitterness to balance out the flavors of the malt. We then chose a Czech yeast strain that accentuated the malt and fermented nice and clean. After fermentation COTU Oktoberfest went through an extended cold conditioning period known as lagering. After lagering, the beer was filtered, removing any yeast that had not yet dropped out naturally. COTU Oktoberfest is malty, clean and refreshing. Golden to amber in color, we think our Oktoberfest would be right at home in the festival tents of Munich. Or Virginia. Prost!

5.7% ABV/25 IBUs/7 SRM

Perennial Static Electricity Double IPA 4 pack $19.99

Static Electricity is an 8% DIPA brewed with Flaked Oats and Vienna malt grown in Chile. Hopped in the kettle and dry-hopped with a reasonable amount of Simcoe and Falconer"s Flight. Apricot and oranges on the nose and palate with a slight bitterness.
ABV: 8%

Perennial Fantastic Voyage Coconut Stout 16 oz $7.99

The rebirth of Fantastic Voyage is a return to slow jams and silk sheets. We combine a smooth yet strong imperial milk stout base with a heap of dried coconut in the whirlpool. The result is a luscious blend of bakers chocolate, subtle roast, and sweet coconut. So take a sip and just sail on.
ABV: 11.5%

The Wines!!

Dedicato Contessa Carola Prosecco Extra Dry $ 14.99
11,5% ABV
Pale straw yellow with greenish hues.
Fragant floral and fruity perfumes with pleasant hints of golden apple and candied fruits.
Crisp, medium-bodied, harmonious with a delicious aromatic after-taste.
Ideal for the whole meal and excellent as an aperitif.

Savian Pinot Grigio $13.99

13.0% ABV
This wine is a delight to the eye with its many hues changing from pale yellow to its characteristic sand colour, as well as to the nose with its slightly fruity bouquet, accompanied by a light note of almonds. Soft and harmonious, slightly bitter in taste.

Corvina Veronese Brunelli $18.99

This unusual example of Corvina Veronese – the Veneto area’s most important grape variety, vinified on its own – is a successful expression of the family’s age-old traditional method of drying the grapes for a brief period. Corte Cariano is ideal with flavourful soups or dishes with mushrooms or truffle, fresh pasta dishes with meat sauces or richly flavoured red meat recipes.

   93 POINTS | James Suckling (Nov. 2016)

Chianti Rufina Fattoria Lavacchio$19.99
90% Sangiovese, 5% Lanaiolo Nero, 5% Ciliegiolo
It appears ripe plum in color and has a lot of earthy mineral aromas and flavours. It is medium to full bodied, with firm tannins and a hint of fruity notes and spices on the finish.
Serving suggestions: In its early years this wine is complimented with all food and when aged it is delicious with sauced meats, poultry and roasts.

Fontegalli Fattoria Lavacchio $29.99
60% Merlot, 40% Syrah
Fontegalli is the name of the well from which we extract our water. As water, the source of life and the element of absolute quality, this wine represents our research for purity and quality without compromises or limits. The result is a wine of great elegance and intensity, capable of fascinating even the finest palates.
The appearance is a deep plum hue with a luxurious velvety texture. It has a rich and complex palate with fantastic length, with fruity concentrated overtones of blackberry, vanilla and oak.
Serving suggestion: It pairs best with roast beef, game and matured cheeses.

The Beers!!

Commonwealth Papi Chulo IPA 4 pack $17.99
"I don’t know the exact blend of hops that have gone into this 6.5% ABV IPA, but I can tell you Papi Chulo carries a wonderful blend of tropical fruit flavors of mango, apricot, light melon, grapefruit and more. The brewery, however, hasn’t forgotten about what makes an IPA an IPA — the bitterness. At 54 IBU, the brew brings a solid hop bite to keep all of that fruitiness in check and reminder you this isn’t a fruit juice you’ve got in your glass. Not only is Papi Chulo and excellent IPA with well-rounded flavors, it also served as an excellent introduction to the Virginia brewery. The beer certainly has that modern, tropical lean to it, but the company hasn’t forgotten to bring the bite to the party. Without that hop bitterness the IPA would still be pretty tasty, but not nearly as refreshing or tasty. I may have originally been on a mission to pick up some malt-forward brews, but am glad I found this tasty IPA, as well."

Licking Hole Creek Nuclear Nugget Imperial Honey IPA 4 pack $15.99
" Darker amber orange color. Thin off-white head, leaving good dots of lace. Really nice, big piney resiny hop nose. Much bigger, more assertive hop than the 4 Pillars IIPA from these guys that we tried earlier. Lighter caramel malt here, light spiciness, and a good bit of honey to it. My first thought when I heard this was a DIPA with honey was of Hopslam, but this is much more piney and resiny, I think. Moderate to bigger bitter taste, moderate sweet. Alcohol works reasonably well. Just a very light warmth on the end. Smooth, kind of crisp, lighter carbonation. More slick texture. Pretty nice, big balanced DIPA. Nice longer resiny hoppy finish."

Licking Hole Creek Heir Apparent Imperial Stout $4 pack $16.99
"Aroma of cinnamon, vanilla, cocoa and maybe a chili pepper? Caramelized sugars. Definitely best at 50 degrees. Warm flavors of milk chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla and a subtle spice of a chili or jalapeno pepper. Smooth and medium bodied in the mouth. Hides the ABV well (over 11%). Aftertaste is more cocoa, cinnamon with a hint of spicy pepper. Outstanding beer. Very similar to Mexican Cake. Top notch."
