The Wine Cabinet

09/13/2018

Dear Subscriber

Tomorrow is National Peanut Day!!
Saturday is National Rande Jenus BirthDay!!
Tuesday is the first Wine Club Class of the new season!

One of the three events above, one is certainly of more import than the others - National Peanut Day, of course. (that"s a joke - Bazinga, as Sheldon would say.)

If you"d like to give Rande best wishes on Saturday, then you should come into the shop and buy as much beer, wine, cheese and anything else that you can safely carry out the door. I can"t think of anything that would make him happier!

Of course there might be some ancillary benefits for the rest of the staff - raises might be discussed; time would pass more quickly; wouldn"t have to dust. I"m sure there"s more. :->

It"s a great weekend. Not only do we have excellent wines and beers on the docket, but you also have a slate of college and professional games to enjoy (baseball, football - take your choice). And you can"t cheer properly with a dry throat.

I"ll send another note on Saturday, but don"t wait to sign up for our class on Tuesday!
The Great Grapes of Austria!!
We start promptly at 7:00!!

You may see some new faces around the shop, please make them feel welcome!
However,we"re still willing to consider other possibilities. If it"s always been your dream to be of service to others as they select the perfect wine or beer for the next important meal, now"s your chance.

"Beautiful dark ruby in color, this wine showcases lovely spice notes on the nose. On the palate, this elegant, classic Bordeaux blend demonstrates hints of spice and nutmeg that co-mingle with white pepper flavors in delicate harmony. 93 Points Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate!

"The 2014 is a beauty, with plenty of finesse, forest floor, floral blueberry notes, silky tannins, medium to full body, high energy, a vibrant mouthfeel, and a long crisp finish with loads of blue and black fruits. It should drink nicely for 15 or more years."

91 Points  Vinous, Antonio Galloni
The 2014 Red Wine (Sonoma County) has turned out beautifully. Ripe, luscious and voluptuous to the core, the 2014 exudes richness and concentration. The high percentage of Cabernet Franc give the wine its lifted aromatics, while the Merlot adds softness and juiciness throughout. With a little aeration, the 2014 can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. The 2014 spent ten months in oak, about 30% new.

CENYTH is a project from the Jackson Family’s small vineyard estates with the highly respected Bordelais winemaker Pierre Seillan, assisted by his daughter Helene, making the wines from Sonoma County vineyards.

Cenyth is Middle English for a direction or path taken.

Hélène’and Pierre Seillan

Pierre Seillan is best known as a winemaker whose Californian Bordeaux blends, particularly those marketed through the luxe Vérité label ($300-$500 per bottle), have earned multiple 100-point scores from Robert Parker.

Cenyth represents Hélène’s mentorship with her father, world-renowned winemaker Pierre Seillan of Verite fame has three decades of experience in Bordeaux under his belt, including stints in the Loire, Lalande-a-Pomerol and Saint Emilion, before coming to California in 1997. He blends his small micro-cuvées with a preconceived notion of how the wine should taste, ostensibly a Californian wine in a Bordeaux mould. Applying the knowledge and techniques she has observed and learned from her father over a lifetime, Hélène crafted the inaugural 2009 vintage of Cenyth, a Bordeaux- blend from mountain and hillside vineyards in Sonoma County.
As she continues on her path as winemaker, Hélène is using her experience in the vineyards of France and her passion for Sonoma County to define her own style. Through her old and new world experience, she has learned many lessons and important values, but perhaps none are as
significant as the lessons she continues to learn from her father.

Hélène Seillan spent her childhood in both France and California, surrounded by family and friends for whom winemaking was as much a passion as it was a profession. Following in her father’s footsteps, Hélène pursued a career in winemaking and began splitting her time between Sonoma County and Saint-Émilion. Starting in 2006, she served as assistant winemaker for her father at the family’s Bordeaux estate, where she worked on all aspects of winery management showing the same talent, passion and ability as her father.

Hélène holds a degree in Viticulture and Oenology from the Institut Rural de Vayres in Bordeaux. When she is not in the vineyards, Hélène likes to indulge her second passion for food and enjoys cooking for friends and family.

The Wines!!

Tegernseerhof T 26 Grüner Veltliner 2016 Federspiel®  $15.99                                                                                The vineyard is called Frauenweingarten. When we tasted this wine the first time in 2006 it was in tank #26. Very aromatic, full of round fruit balanced with crisp acidity. The distinct soil lends a pleasant minerality, while the tropical fruit play is balanced with a white pepper note typical of this varietal. Pairs well with a wide range of foods including Asian cuisine and fish with fresh herbs.

Heinrich Hartl Rotgipfler 2016 $19.99

92 points -
 ANNE KREBIEHL MW

“Aromatic, ripe red apple and melon notes appear first on the nose but are underpinned by a savory streak of salty yeast. The palate brings the yeastiness to the fore, giving a lovely creamy texture. The finish is fresh but mellow.”

Anton Bauer Wagram Cuvee 2015 $17.99

“Austrian Winemaker of the year 2017”

40% Blaufrankisch   40% Zweigelt  15% Cabernet Sauvignon  5% Merlot

Cherry fruit with amaretto tones, red berries and herbs. On the palate cherry fruit again, with dark berry aromas and apleasant background of herbs, good extract fruit, fine soft tannin. It finishes with a dry elegance and delicately herb tones of chocolate and cherries. Although absolutely delicious on its own, it will complement beef, duck, grilled pork, tuna, and rich red sauces.

Leo Hillinger Pinot Noir Eveline 2015 $19.99
Pinot Noir from Austria! It has a typical Pinot Noir nose with strawberries, raspberries and floral notes such as violets. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied. It has intense notes of herbs and puréed dark berries. The wine has typical Burgundy structure with soft tannins, a juicy ripeness and an elegant, long finish.

Leo Hillinger Blaufränkisch Leithaberg DAC 2014 $34.9
The Leithaberg DAC has a dark ruby red with a black core. Ripe cherry, blackberry, graphite, licorice, and spicy notes. Fresh cherry-fruits on the plate, soft, tight structure.
"A wine with elegant tannin, good acidity, dark berries and good spice on the long smooth finish. This wine matches more than perfectly to grilled steaks, lamb and venison."

The Beers!!

Maine Beer Peeper Pale Ale 500 ml $6.99
5.2% ABV
After a few years of home brewing in our garage, my brother and I decided we should open a brewery so that we could share our beer. In 2009 we started with a one barrel system and worked on a single recipe, over and over, until Peeper was born. And now we have enough to share. Cheers!

LIGHT CITRUS, RASPBERRIES, BLACKBERRIES, SUBTLE PINE, LIGHT BREADY
HOPS: AMARILLO, CASCADE, CENTENNIAL
MALT: AMERICAN 2-ROW, CARAPILS, VIENNA, RED WHEAT

Evil Twin "Even While They Teach" IPA 4 pack $21.99

7.0% ABV
A good amount of tropical fruit (guava, pineapple), lots of malt (surprisingly so), a good amount of hops, a hint of the floral quality, and a little citrus (orange, in particular). At first it kind of tastes like a an English IPA - heavy on the malt, light on the hops - but then the fruit kicks in. It"s oddly tasty after that.

Captain Lawrence "Golden Delicious" Triple IPA, Aged in Apple Brandy barrels 4 pack $20.99

ABV:10%
There’s nothing quite like Mom’s apple pie…but I’m willing to bet this beer’s pretty darn close. An American Tripel, dry-hoped with Amarillo hop and aged in Apple Brandy oak barrels from one of this country’s oldest distilleries. The tropical aroma of the hops and the delicate apple aroma from the barrels are a perfect match. Straight from the Captain’s cellar to yours, we hope you enjoy.

Albert Bichot Wines
Liz Van Wazer

The Vineyard!

Albert Bichot
The first traces of the Bichot family dates back to 1214. They settled in Burgundy in 1350. The family"s symbol (pictured on the label) has not changed since. In 1831, Bernard Bichot was the first in the family to enter the wine business.
His son, Albert Bichot (namesake), gave the family business new momentum in the late 19th century.
Albert Bichot also established the winery in the centre of Beaune in 1912.
Albert Bichot offers wines from the entirety of Burgundy and Beaujolais with unbelievable quality. There are six Domaines within Albert Bichot - each offering estate grown grapes, and individual winemakers that provide the utmost quality.

The Wines!!

Chablis 2015 $26.99
Fresh and elegant on the nose with lemony and mineral nuances. Lovely overall harmony with remarkable power and length. Enjoy the freshness of the Chablis as an aperitif, or pair it with seafood to appreciate the richness.

Macon-Lugny “Les Charmes” 2015 $25.99
This vineyard is located in the Maconnais region at the heart of the Macon-Lugny appellation (Southern Burgundy). The Les Charmes vines are planted on a renowned 100-hectare limestone plateau. Notes of peach, apricot, and white blossom aromas with a touch of lemon.

Morgon “Les Charmes”, Beaujolais 2015 $21.99
Morgon is located within Beaujolais (South of Burgundy) and made with the Gamay grape. The gamay grape produces wines that are fresh with a delicate finish. The Morgon Les Charmes are excellent with light cheese, game meats, and heavier fish dishes.

Pinto Noir, Secret de Famille 2015 $24.99
Our Bourgogne Pinot Noir Secret de Famille ("Family Secret") is crafted from a carefully sourced blend of grapes from prestigious terroirs of the Côte d"Or region only (around Pommard, Chambolle-Musigny, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Gevrey-Chambertin, Marsannay…). We treat these wines as “villages” wines, where yields are restricted and ageing is adapted for each wine. This charming wine features predominant fruity aromas of blackcurrant and wild red berries. Velvety and silky, this wine boasts soft, balanced structure on the palate, which ends with a delicate finish reminiscent of red fruit.

Chorey-Les-Beaune 2016 $49.99
Chorey-Les-Beaune is located in the heart of the Cote de Beaune. The wines here are predominately red and the ancient stony soil leads to excellent wines. The nose features notes of toast, red fruit and jam, with aging those move to become gamey notes of leather and spice. Fun bodied and velvety, this wine has lovely tannic structure that leads to a long, subtle finish.

The Beers!!

Tart, crisp, refreshing Saison.

Southern Tier Rum Barrel Pumking 500ml $11.99

13.4% ABV
Back in 2014 we had the good fortune of finding a cache of rum barrels which we quickly filled with Pumking making what was affectionately called “Rumking.” We were lucky to have found more barrels, and in 2018, found some of the best we’ve ever used. This batch is at least as delicious as versions past.

Imagine our inimitable Imperial Pumking Ale as the captain on the high seas, flying the Jolly Roger. The ‘King sails for ports unknown in this limited release. Rum Barrel Aged Pumking has been kept like secret treasure in the hollows of the brewery, patiently awaiting discovery. Yo ho ho!

Enjoy Rum Barrel Aged Pumking now, or keep it hidden standing upright in a dark and cool place until you can say ‘anchors aweigh!’

Alewerks Paycheck Porter 6 pack $12.99

5.6% ABV
a Robust Porter, boldly American, and big in all the right places. We brew this beer for, and with, rough hands and hearty appetites. Look for notes of roasted coffee and toasted cocoa.
