Dear Subscriber

The Simple Joys of Summer! at
The Wine Cabinet!

The Summer Night is like a perfection of thought.
Wallace Stevens

Speaking of perfection,

Today is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day!!
We could probably have a long and spirited discussion about which of the pictures above best represents perfection in the summer season. Watermelon would certainly have its strong and vocal advocates. For many years, I would probably have been on that side of the argument.

But my mind may have been irrevocably changed this past April at The Masters in Augusta, Georgia. More of a few of you have heard this story. Please allow me one last telling!

They added a new item to the menu this year at The National - yes, it was an Ice Cream Sandwich. But what a sandwich!! My favorite cookie (a Snickerdoodle) and one of my favorite ice creams(freshly made Peach) combined in a massive delight that sold for the mere pittance of $2.00!!

All I can say is "Heaven on Earth".

Okay. I know I"m supposed to be giving you reasons to visit the Wine Cabinet this weekend. There are plenty (None of them center around our having any ice cream sandwiches available.) But there will be some excellent wines and beers to accompany the remarkably good soups from Tim Quinn and the Shore Boys portfolio on Saturday!!

Don"t let the threat of rain deter you. We"ll be awaiting your visit with high hopes and expectations!!

And make sure you say hi!! to our newest associate, Susie Patrick.. You"re gonna love her smile!

Tell all your friends about The Wine Cabinet!!

History of Toro….

Wine has been made in Toro since the end of the 1st century BC, when the ancient Greeks taught the local Celtic tribes. In the Early Middle Ages, the wines from Toro were the first to be traded in the region of the River Duero.
King Alfonso IX granted lands to several religious orders with the understanding that they would plant vines, and many of the 40 churches that exist in the town of Toro today were built thanks to the wealth generated by the wine trade. The reputation of the wines from Toro grew and it began to be sold in other cities further afield such as Seville and Palencia. At this time the wine producers built underground wineries (bodegas) in order to obtain better quality wines and to have more effective temperature control.
At the end of the 19th century great quantities of wine were exported to France during the phylloxera crisis, which did not affect the local vines as they were protected by the sandy soil. For this reason, the vines of other regions of Spain were replaced by vines from Toro. For this reason, Toro still has a number of very old vineyards with pre-phylloxera Tinta de Toro, which in recent years have been used to source grapes for special cuvées.

A bit about Bodegas Sobreno
In the early 90"s, a group of Rioja winemakers became interested in Toro, convinced that top class wines could be made from the local Tempranillo clone known as Tinta de Toro. The combination of Rioja know-how, modern technology, strict attention to detail and fine old-vines plantings has led Bodegas Sobreño to almost instant success in Spain and on the international scene. Bodegas Sobreño was founded in 1998. Just 7 years later, Bodegas Sobreño has become one of the best-known wineries in the region. The winery owns 1,400 barriques (primarily American oak) and boasts a production capacity of 500,000 bottles/year.

The principal winemaking consultant is Manuel Ruiz Hernández, one of Rioja"s most respected enologists. Finca Sobreño is one of the original winegrowers in the D.O. Toro. Founded by Roberto San Ildefonso in 1998, it was one of less than 10 registered wineries in the appellation, which today counts more than 50 producers. Roberto was originally from Rioja, but left the region when he realized the potential to craft bold, powerful and beautifully structured wines from the Tempranillo clone, Tinta de Toro. This variety produces smaller grapes and with thicker skins than Tempranillo. Among other features, this grape has a higher color concentration, as well as more anthocyanins (which give the wine its aromas) and tannins (which gives structure).
Finca Sobreño currently owns 80 hectares (197 acres) of vineyard, of which about half are vines over 45 years old and divided in many small parcels. In addition, the winery controls 155 hectares of independently owned old-vines plots. The vineyards are 100% Tinta de Toro, pruned "en vaso" (bush vines), as well as double cordon Royat in the newer plantings. Soil types are alluvial with a thick clay subsoil, and a mix of sand and gravel. Yields are quite low, averaging about 4,000 kg/hectare. Many of the vines are ungrafted, in other words, they are planted directly on ungrafted root-stock, thus allowing the vines to live for a long period of time.

Rich, ample and lingering on the palate with light floral and spicy notes. Hallmarked by its pronounced acidity and zesty tang. A long finish.
SUGGESTED FOOD PAIRING“Minestra di Sgavajone”: a typical soup from the fishermen of Anzio made with ‘sgavajone’ a local fish rarely found outside their family homes.

San Lorenzo Montepulciano D"Abruzzo $12.99

Rocche Costa Magna Nebbiolo "Riccardo" $19.99
On May 15, 1841 the police office of the royal Military Command in Alba granted Luigi Costamagna, son of the estate’s founder Francesco Antonio Costamagna, an official licence “to retail the wine produced from his own vineyards” in La Morra. In 1911, Francesco Costamagna and his son Riccardo were awarded a gold medal at the “Gran Premio dell’Esposizione Internazionale di Torino” for fifty years of winemaking. When Francesco died, his son Riccardo, an attorney, continued to manage the winery with the help of his wife Maddalena. When he died in the 1930s, Riccardo’s wife decided to sell the vineyards located outside La Morra. Wine was produced only for the family’s own consumption and some grapes were sold to other winemakers. In the late 1960s, Maddalena’s niece, Claudia Ferraresi, together with her husband Giorgio Locatelli, restarted the commercial winemaking activity, planted new vineyards and modernised the old winery. Since the mid 1980s their son Alessandro Locatelli has been managing the winery with the help of agronomist Gian Piero Romana and enologist Giuseppe Caviola. Alessandro has improved the vineyards and wine-making techniques, he has been developing customer sales all over the world, and so carrying on the family tradition with passion and drawing on the wealth of experience gathered by the family.

The Beers!!

Maui Brewing Mana Wheat 4 pack $12.99
The promised pineapple in the nose is present in the taste, but not overpowering. It adds a light sweetness that’s complemented by some tropical rind flavors along with cinnamon, ginger, and zest that add a refreshing spiciness. The wheat profile is evident upfront with notes of bread crust but is followed by a juicy, hoppier finish that sharpens the taste. The beer is highly carbonated with a light mouthfeel for an American wheat, and the finish is dry. The high carbonation makes this beer a true thirst-quencher in the Hawaiin heat.

Stone Fear. Movie. Lions. Double IPA 6 pack $14.99
New England-Style IPAs are all the rage. Fans of Stone repeatedly ask for our take on the style, which can be met with some criticism. Rooted in West-Coast style IPAs for decades, how would we do it? Fear no more. Our brewers took the approach to deliver incredibly hoppy and aromatic flavor while keeping it very balanced, and upping the alcohol unnoticeably - nailing this astounding one-of-a-kind creation.
Overall this unfiltered double IPA is juiced up with massive tropical & citrus notes. The mild bitterness and relatively dry body compliment the style, and the residual maltiness nicely rounds it out. Lingering lime peel and tropical fruit derived from the hops stand out on the finish, begging one to seek out more.

Weyerbacher 23rd Anniversary Golden Stout 4 pack $17.99

11.1% ABV
Weyerbacher’s 23 is an Imperial Golden Stout brewed with cascara, coffee beans and cacao nibs. While golden in color, this beer has the roasty, chocolatey qualities that a stout would have along with hints of dark fruit and tobacco.

The Wines!!

Michelet Chablis 2015 $22.99
Chablis is famous for crisp, unoaked, mineral-tinged Chardonnays in northern Burgundy.  Michelet"s Chablis is powerfully aromatic with white flowers, fresh fruit, lime, and citrus aromas.  It is a wonderful accompaniment to shellfish, oysters, fish, veal, and foie gras.

Rated one of the Year"s Best White Burgundies by Wine & Spirits Magazine.

Le Jade Viognier 2017 $9.99
Viognier, a grape famous in Virginia, is actually believed to have originated in Dalmatia.  Here in Southern France the grape enjoys warm sunny summers that help it develop heady aromas of honeysuckle, melon, guava, and ripe peach.  It is full and rich on the finish.  Almost opulent with just a tinge of acidity that makes it bright and fresh.  It works very well with richer dishes and even spicy curry sauce.

Reverdy Sancerre Rouge 2016 $19.99
Sancerre is most famously an expression of Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley, but as a red or rose wine it is 100% Pinot Noir!  The wine is spicy and juicy with cherry aromas and it pairs well with rabbit, roasted poultry, and ham.

Domaine Manoir du Carra Julienas 2015 $17.99
Some of the finest and most age-worthy expressions of the Gamay grape come not from the fresh and fruity Beaujolais Nouveau, but from the hilly "cru" regions of the north.  This wine exhibits a red plum and cranberry-scented bouquet that is nicely defined.  Very fresh, with supple tannins and a purity of fruit.   Pair it with game, poultry, and cheese.

Chateau Trois Moulins Haut Medoc 2015 $22.99
A flour mill just nearby explains the origin of this cru bourgeois’ name, which means “three mills”. Already in its day, it attracted English and Dutch connoisseurs. History continues for this ruby-colored, subtle wine with its elegant bouquet of jammy red fruits. It is subtle and very round on the palate and has a long powerful finish.  Made from 52% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc.

Another great example from the classic 2015 Bordeaux vintage!

The Beers!!

Ardent German Style Pilsener 4 pack $12.99

5% ABV • 36 IBU
Ardent Pilsner is a golden straw, clear pilsner with classic lager aroma that is clean and bready, with light grassiness from 100% Hallertauer mittelfrüh noble hops. Medium body and high carbonation accentuate the soft bitterness, malty sweetness and mild fruitiness. A crisp, refreshing German-style pils that finishes dry and clean with a creamy, long-lasting head that leaves rich lacing.

Parkway  Brewing "Four Damn Fights to a Pint" Double IPA 4 pack $15.99

9.5% ABV, 165 IBU"s
This delicious Double IPA uses a variety of hops including Galaxy, Azzaca and Centennial. Four Damn Fights has notes of citrus and tropical fruits, stone fruit and grass, as well as earthy/mineral and spicy notes.

Alewerks Black Forest Barrel Stout 4 pack $24.99/ 1 - $6.99

9.5% ABV
Inspired by the famous dessert, this beer recipe developed from barrels of unusual history. The imperial chocolate stout is aged in oak touched by Bourbon and brandy; Montmorency sour cherries are added to the barrels, and the result is a genuine dessert course in a glass.
Hints of bourbon complement a creamy sweetness, as well as distinct notes of cherry, chocolate, and vanilla.
