It isn"t often that The Derby and Cinco De Mayo fall on the same day!! Boy, are we going to party this year!!

And for those of you who have asked about my pick in the Derby this year (my record is 4 of 5 winners in the last 5 years) - It"s VINO ROSSO! No, I"m not letting my love of wine get in the way. Ask me about my rational when you"re in the shop!

Unfortunately, we don"t have the right to provide you any Bourbon for those mint juleps, but we have everything else that you might need!!

Special Events in the next few weeks -

May 12: At The Austrian Embassy - Seminars with Klaus Wittauer.

Rose"s are flying off the shelf this year! It seems that demand hasn"t yet peaked for luscious wines. Dry and aromatic, they"re the perfect choice for a 90 F day in May! If you"re not sure which one you"d like, take six!! You can try each one and them decide!

If that"s not enough, you can take a bagful of wines and beers from the tasting tables and sample them as well! Soon enough, you won"t care which one you like the best!

And don"t forget - all the wines on the tasting tables are discounted by 10% from the first bottle you buy!

How"s that for being good for the community!?

Just to top off the weekend - Tim Quinn will be here on Saturday with his fantastic soups and crabcakes. If you, by some strange chance, have not yet sampled these delectable goodies, you better get yourself in here. We"ve not run out yet, but we come close at times!!

Karl Steininger is best known for his sparkling wines, or sekt, but this delightful Gruner shows his talent with Austria’s flagship white. Racy and firm, it is searingly dry and vibrant with lime, quince and lemon grass flavors. Its hint of talc shows the minerality of the Kamptal appellation, in Austria’s Lower Danube region.

Our Thoughts on this wine.....

This wine is an exceptional example of Austrian Gruner Veltliner, it features mineraly nuances, shows balance and length, fine bouquet, and is reinforced by the spice of white pepper.

Gruner Veltliner is an excellent accompaniment to nearly all dishes, because of its spiciness, balance and elegance. This might be the perfect Father"s Day white -  Perfect with grilled meats and fish, fried seafood and sushi, chicken, turkey, pork, vegetables and spicy Asian foods. How could you go wrong?!?!

The label is inspired by the drawing by famed Architect Steven Holl on a cocktail napkin of  the original blue print of the Loisium Museum, cellar world and Spa Hotel. A single vineyard Veltliner with inviting fruit in the nose, exotic notes and fine ripe aroma of apples. The finish is complex and balanced with a long beautiful echo and the traditional white pepper. A fantastic summer white that will age and brighten your cold winter nights!

About Family Steininger….

"Wines are like people, everyone is different!" Karl"s favorite saying.

Karl and Brigitta manage the winery together with their daughters, Anna, her husband Peter and Lisa. Karl and Brigitta took over the winery from Karl"s parents.

Originally, it was a mixed farm with just a few vineyards. Karl went to school for wine making and Brigitta also grew up at her parents’ winery, where she got to know the daily life of a wine making family.

Together they decided to stop the farming and concentrate only on wine making. Austria is a small wine country. Brigitta and Karl realized that they only can survive on the international market was by making high quality wines. 1989 they started to produce sparkling wine after they had travelled to the Champagne region and Karl spent a number of years studying the technique of making excellent sparkling wine. He believes that the finest sparkling wines are first excellent still wines that are enabled by the second fermentation.

The Wines!!

CEP Sauvignon Blanc, Hopkins Ranch , Russian River $24.99
The 2017 Cep Hopkins Sauvignon Blanc is excellent. The alluring nose emphasizes tart, green fruits (kaffir lime and other sour citrus) with savory notes of fennel, thyme, mint and tarragon. The fruit on the attack confirms the lime flavor in the nose adding lime pith and roasted lime nuances. The midpalate has salty and mineral notes as well as a hint of floral sweetness. The acidity is fresh throughout making the wine crisp and focused with a clean finish. Our best effort to date and one I hope we repeat next year. 650 cases

CEP Rose",
Hopkins Ranch , Russian River $24.99
The 2017 Cep Hopkins Rose is true to style emphasizing freshness and lift over weight and texture. The aroma leans towards watermelon water and unripe strawberries with a hint of cream (though it is made in 100% stainless steel). The fruit on the attack adds nectarines, ruby grapefruit, and apricot to flavors of watermelon. The midpalate has a little more roundness than the 2016 Cep Rose though the acidity is quite bright. The long finish leaves a salty tang with hints of rose water. A delicious, fresh rose perfect to pair or drink alone. 500 cases

Stix Chardonnay, Russian River $18.99
Russian River Valley Chardonnay typifies the soft, fruity, bright and crisp flavors that made the Russian River Valley famous for this varietal. The 2013 Chardonnay comes from three select vineyards in 2 distinctly different micro climates ranging from very cool in the Green Valley area to warmer days in the Russian River plain area. The gravelly soil associated with the Russian River provides minerality and structure to grapes. The resulting wine is a fantastic example of Chardonnay showcasing the effects of micro climates in the Russian River Valley. Our Chardonnay had 20% malolactic fermentation to help round out the edges while maintaining the crisp Russian River influence. Aromas of apples and citrus combined with a hint of French oak make this wine enjoyable by itself or with food.

Stix Cabernet Sauvignon $21.99
Chocolate and dark fruit notes on the bouquet, intense plum, blackberry, and cassis flavors emerging on the palate and finishing with hints of vanilla and cedar. Well balanced, complex Cabernet Sauvignon.

Mauritson Zinfandel, Dry Creek $32.99

92 Points The Wine Spectator
Sleek, focused and complex, this has floral raspberry and toasty spice aromas and layered flavors of black cherry, smoky sage and licorice that linger against lively tannins. Drink now through 2026. 2,419 cases made

The Beers!!

Commonwealth Mano Del Puma, Mexican Lager 4 pack $14.99
 4.8% ABV with 22 IBUs.
Odd name, it translates from Spanish into "human hand of the puma". Perhaps they meant "zarpa del puma" which means "the puma"s paw". What"s the Steve Martin Joke? "Boy, those French. They have a different word for everything!" I guess the Spanish do too! Anyway, it"s a clear gold beneath a short head of white. The head retention is OK and there"s some spotty lacing. The aroma is limited but displays some bready, lightly sweetish malt with just a suggestion of hops in the background. This is kind of a Mexican-style lager though, so you shouldn"t expect anything more. The flavor then follows, and I"m a little surprised that Commonwealth would make a beer like this, it just doesn"t seem to be their style, it"s too simple. Maybe they"re looking to sell more beer at the beach though, which would make sense. And just because it"s a boring style doesn"t mean it should be ignored or scored badly. It"s nicely balanced, and really well polished. They know what they"re doing over there and they"ve done it up right. Moderate bitterness, light-medium body, slightly less than standard level carbonation... just a basic golden lager really, although there must be some adjunct in use as it"s not that grainy. On a hot day in the sun I"d say you could hardly turn this down.

Stone "Exalted" IPA Loral & Citra Hops 6 pack $13.99

Adroit Theory"Death of Civilization" Part 3, 22 oz. $13.99

Clos LaChance Vineyards!

In 1987, co-owners Bill and Brenda Murphy decided to plant a few rows of Chardonnay in their Saratoga backyard, both for landscaping purposes and to realize their dreams of being small-scale vintners. A few years later, the wines produced from this small backyard vineyard were good enough to sell to the public. It was at this point that Clos LaChance formed into a commercial winery. The first released wines were from the 1992 vintage. The next 15 years would take the Murphy’s from 200 cases of wine produced to 80,000; 3/4 of an acre to 150 acres planted and 20 full-time and 25 seasonal employees.

Being a good steward of land and resources is a key practice in Clos LaChance’s wine making and wine growing philosophy. Owners Bill and Brenda Murphy are especially vested in the sustainability of the vineyard and winery—creating a legacy for their children, grandchildren and generations to come.

Sustainability is an ever-evolving practice. A member of the Central Coast Vineyard Team, Clos LaChance has also actively participated in the Wine Institute Sustainability Self-Assessment Program, identifying strengths and opportunities for improvement. We are proud of current achievements to create an environmentally, economically and socially sound business, and will continue working towards more sustainable practices.

In early 2009, Clos LaChance’s 150-acre Estate vineyard was one of seventeen California vineyards to be Sustainably Certified via the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. The production facility was certified shortly thereafter.

The Beers!!

Three Notch"d Minute Man New England Style IPA 6 pack $12.99
7.0% ABV, 20 IBU, 4.0 BeerAdvocate "Outstanding"
Forget everything you know about IPA’s!  This unique and brand new style of IPAs has a super low bitterness, allowing the fresh fruity flavor and aroma of hops to completely dominate.  This beer is unfiltered and unclarified, leaving the yeast to add to the smooth mouthfeel.  The Galaxy, Mosaic and Idaho 7 hops make this beer super “juicy” and fruity with a strong, citrus bouquet aroma.

Escutcheon "Slip Angle" New England Style IPA 4 pack $15.99

7.0% ABV, 57 IBU
When grain is transported in bulk onboard a ship, and important consideration is the "Slip Angle" of the grain. The Slip Angle of grain is around 20°, which means that if the ship rolls more than 20° the grain will shift which will cause the ship to develop a large list to one side.Any additional rolling will cause the grain to shift even further which could cause the vessel to capsize. Our Slip Angle IPA is a New England Style IPA which definitely "lists" heavily to the hoppy side. Purposefully hazy and juicy, this beer is definitely unbalanced and we hope you enjoy the dry hopped flavor.

Adroit Theory "Dia de Los Muertos" Russian Imperial Stout, 22oz $13.99.

13.7% ABV, 51 IBU
Intense aromas of Dark Chocolate, Coffee, & Caramel. Body is thick and syrupy with a roasted character that dominates, flashes of bitterness are quickly succumb to the sweet finish. There is a place where the restless souls wander. Burdened by the weight of their own sadness, they cannot enter heaven. So they wait; trapped between our world and the next. Searching for a way to rid themselves of their pain- in the hope that somehow, someday they will be reunited with the ones they love.
