Dear Subscriber

Today is 15 March, 2018

at
The Wine Cabinet

Saturday, March 17 is St Patrick’s Day and it is celebrated in many parts of the world, especially by Irish communities and organizations. Many people wear an item of green clothing on the day. Parties featuring Irish food and drinks that are dyed in green food color are part of this celebration. It is a time when children can indulge in sweets and adults can enjoy a “pint” of beer at a local pub. Many restaurants and pubs offer Irish food or drink, which include:

Irish brown bread.
Corned beef and cabbage.
Beef and Guinness pie.
Irish cream chocolate mousse cake.
Irish coffee.
Irish potato champ, also known as poundies, cally or pandy.
Irish stew.
Irish potato soup.

And by the way, we have two excellent Raclette""s in the shop at the moment - one smoked, one with Truffle. Click on the picture and you can get a little more information on what is an absolute staple of evening gatherings in Switzerland. No need to thank us. That"s why we"re here!!

Lastly, We understand that Total Beverage is opening today in Reston. While we recognize that they make quite a fuss about their loss leaders (wines that they sell for cost or less) we hope that you agree with us that service, friendliness, overall quality and value is what the patron is expecting in the local wine shop.
We hope that we are giving that to you in great measure.

We thought it would be a good time to thank most sincerely for the exceptional support that you have given us over the last 15 years as your local family wine and beer shop. We always welcome competition, it makes us work a little harder to meet your needs. Our goal is to match the per capita consumption of wine for Argentina (we"re only 25% of the way there) so we have plenty of room for you to expand your wine buying!

Thank you again for your loyalty!

For those of you that haven"t given up chocolate for the Lenten period before Easter (I know there"s a few of you out there!!), you have got to get your hands on good dark chocolate and a sturdy glass of Tawny Port - believe me, it"s good for your mental health!

We"ll look forward to seeing you!!

Always Drink Responsibly.

It all starts Tonight with  Open Bottle Thursday!

Cusumano Family

ALTA MORA
 ETNA ROSSO
100% Nerello Mascalese

2014
Castiglione di Sicilia, Italy

This winery from the Cusumano family is in the fertile volcanic soils of Mt. Etna, made from 100% Nerello Mascalese grapes which is indigenous to the region. The name Alta Mora translates to “Tall, Black” representing the great heights of the vineyards on the mountain and the dark, black volcanic soil.

There is a lot going on with the mid palate of this bottling. One minute you think your drinking a Langhe Nebbiolo then next you think it’s a full bodied Willamette Valley Pinot Noir! Medium bodied it pairs well with most fare and at this price you can enjoy it midweek with no guilt!

91 Points  Robert Parker"s Wine Advocate

"This is the base red from the Cusumano brothers" Etna estate. The 2014 Etna Rosso (100% Nerello Mascalese) is tempered and elegant. It offers pretty ruby color saturation and bright aromatic intensity. The bouquet delivers wild berry, cassis, dry earth and tobacco. It is aged in large oak casks for just six months, so you really get a good taste of the fresh fruit at hand. Grapes are harvested and blended from three separate vineyards, Verzella, Pietramarina and Feudo di Mezzo. With 23,500 bottles produced, this is another recommended value buy."

Our Thoughts.........

Perfumed with tons of ripe cherry, currants, dried flowers, dried earth and underbrush/forest floor-like aromas and flavors. With a big Pinot Noir-like elegance and purity, this medium-bodied, seamless red just glides across the palate, has fine tannin, and an undeniable minerality on the finish.
It"s impressive, as well as a great value.

THE WINES OF MOUNT ETNA:
FROM HIGH-ALTITUDE, VOLCANIC VINEYARDS
COME WINES WITH ATTITUDE

Curiosity of Wine Words Wisdom,  Richard Marcis

Making Wine in the Shadow of a Volcano
Among Italy’s numerous and vibrant wine regions, the Mount Etna region in northeastern Sicily seems an unlikely site for producing any wines let alone quality wines. Mount Etna is an active, fearsome volcano that has erupted from time to time, sometimes savagely, for thousands of years. Nonetheless, it is one of Italy’s hottest wine regions, so to speak, and vintners are now scrambling to purchase vineyard property in the region.

As if proximity to Europe’s most active and fearsome volcano wasn’t enough to make growing grapes here a daunting proposition, there are other intimidating considerations.

Etna’s primary wine producing zone rises up the slopes of Mount Etna to an elevation of 3,500 feet and higher - the highest commercial vineyards in the world. Such high-elevation vineyards present some unique problems for vintners. The steeply-sloped, terraced vineyards are difficult to navigate with mechanical equipment so most of the tending and harvesting of the vines has to be done by hand, a time-consuming and expensive proposition. Winters at these high elevations can also be harsh and the summers hot and dry. You have to be committed, patient and tough to run a winery on Mount Etna.

The Wines!!

Steininger Rose" of Cabernet Sauvignon $15.99
Citrus rather than red fruit plays on the nose of this Cabernet Sauvignon rosé. The palate echos that zesty verve, finishing lip-smackingly dry. An easy but fun summer wine.

Steininger Loisium Gruner Veltliner $19.99
Steven Holl

90 Points Decanter
Really pure green apple and tarragon aromas lead into a dry, steely palate with hard-edged green apple and citrus followed by a scattering of white pepper. Moreish and long with a crisp acidity, this is a great food wine.

Hillinger Small Hill $14.99
Slick and polished, handsome and sexy, dashing with a firm body. Former super model turned winemaker, Leo Hillinger, created this blend to make an easy, soft, drinkable, red with dark fruit. A light oak barrel touch and eloquent tannins, this red speaks of drinkability with plush texture and friendly flavors into the finish.

Bauer Zweigelt $14.99
This is a traditional Austrian grape variety. A very elegant wine, harmonious, filled with ripe black cherry and subtle mocha notes. The palate features ripe deep fruit with a gentle smooth medium-bodied mouth feel. The finish is long and has slightly spicy peppery nuances. Austrian reds feature amazingly pure fruit flavors– have this Zweigelt with your next barbeque or at your next party!

Bauer "Artist" Blaufränkisch $34.99
Dark ruby with nearly opaque core, violet highlights and a thin, transparent rim. Dark berry fruit, black berry jam and dark minerals. A juicy, sweetly extracted core is elegantly wrapped in a harmonious veil of fine- grained tannin. The long finish has textures of dark fruit and notes of gianduja. (Chocolate) Potential for further development and aging.

Tasting Notes: Crisp and dry, yet delightfully fruit-forward with luscious flavors and a touch of peach.

Lone Birch Chardonnay 2016 $14.99
Yakima Valley, Washington
All of the Lone Birch wines are sourced from fruit from our 830 acre estate vineyard located in the Yakima Valley. The warm days and cool nights provided by the high desert environment allow the vines to produce exceptional balance with ripe fruit flavors and plenty of natural acidity.

Tasting Notes: A bouquet of honeysuckle and melon leads to a crisp dry and refreshing palate with flavors of zesty lemon and pear.

Mas des Bressades Rose 2016 $12.99
Costieres de Nimes, France

Airfield Estates Merlot 2014 $19.99
Yakima Valley, Washington
Airfield Estates is a family owned and operated winery and vineyard situated in the heart of the Yakima Valley – Washington State’s oldest established AVA. For four generations, our family has been farming in this region. We planted our first wine grapes in 1968, and today, our estate vineyard spans 830 acres and includes over 20 different varietals. The experience and knowledge gained over the years has helped us craft well-balanced wines reflecting great varietal expression and quality.

Tasting Notes: This Merlot delivers an inviting bouquet of black cherry, vanilla, clove, and nutmeg leading to an abundance of bright cherry and soft toasted oak on the palate with a round mouthfeel and firm, lingering tannins taking hold on the finish.

Airfield Estates Dauntless 2015 $19.99
Yakima Valley, Washington
As the name suggests, Airfield Estates has ties to aviation. Prior to our farming days, a portion of our property operated as a training base for hundreds of Army Air Corps pilots during World War II.  After the war, we began farming in the outlying area. To this day, we continue to use a few of the original airplane hangars as farm storage facilities, and we strive to pay tribute to those WWII heroes and veterans of our country with our wide range of 100% estate grown wines.

Tasting Notes: Merlot (73%) takes the lead on this wine, which is rounded out by Malbec (12%), Cabernet Sauvignon (7%), Petit Verdot (4%) and Cabernet Franc. Aromas of herb, barrel spice, pencil lead and red and black fruit are followed by plump yet elegant fruit flavors backed by chalky tannins. It shows a lot of restraint.

It"s all about the Beer.......

College Basketball Madness is upon us and this week we received a Sweet 16 of beers to enjoy while you watch the games and a cider (by request from customer) too!

So many new beers and a cider

Captain Lawrence Brewing Company (Elmsford, NY): Orbital Tilt, Unfiltered IPA - This IPA has been brewed using a healthy dose of imported Pilsner malt and malted oats to create a smooth mouthfeel, then dry hopped with Mosaic lupulin powder for a dank aroma and fruity finish. ABV = 5.9%

From Maine Beer Company (Freeport, ME): Peeper Pale Ale – Original hoppy American ale. Dry, clean, well-balanced with generous dose of American hops. Cascade, and Centennial hop varieties provide a pleasant floral and citrusy hop flavor. A healthy dose of additional Amarillo and Centennial are dry hopped to give this beer an inviting hop aroma. The beer is fermented with a neutral yeast strain and allowed to dry out so it finishes crisp and clean. ABV = 5.5%
From Peak Organic Brewing (Portland, ME): Crush IPA - Crush IPA takes the citrus characteristics of Peak IPA and elevates them with a subtle addition of organic blood orange peel. The juicy citrus aroma really pops, and the brisk body of the beer is accented with notes of bright ripened fruit. ABV = 7%
From Solace Brewing Company (Dulles, VA): Sun’s Out Hops Out Session IPA - Crisp easy drinking Session IPA. Brewed with Citra and Mosaic hops. ABV = 8%
From Shipyard Brewing Company (Portland, ME): Steady Hoppy Pale Ale - Innovatively constructed, brewed in tradition, this hoppy pale ale is truly one for everyone. Designed with an unique blend of new age American Hops, this dependable treat brings forward notes of citrus and lemon grass. Light to medium in body it goes down smooth and easy, finishing crisp, with a kiss of fruity hops. ABV = 5.1%
From Great Divide Brewing Co. (Denver, CO): Orabelle Tripel - ORABELLE is brewed with barley, wheat, oats, and rye. This Belgian-Style Tripel is a golden beauty. Its two yeast strains, orange peel and dash of coriander impart surprising complexity and richness to this delicate ale. ABV = 8.3%
From New Holland Brewing Co. (Holland, MI): Mad Hatter Midwest IPA - Mad Hatter’s whimsy is celebrated with floral aromatics from assertive dry-hopping, and a bright, hoppy body, punctuated with Centennial, Citra and Michigan-grown hops. ABV = 7%
From Anderson Valley Brewing Company (Boonville, CA): Franboise Rose Gose - By adding rose hips to the boil and fresh raspberry puree at the end of fermentation, this kettle-soured beer is a mélange of flavors and aromas. With a light ruby hue, subtle raspberry fruit notes greet the nose and fall soft on the palate; tangy, hibiscus-like flavors mingle with the salty tartness of gose to create a uniquely complex and refreshing drinking experience. ABV = 4.2%
From Ommegang (Cooperstown, NY):
  • Three Philosophers Quadrupel Ale - A unique blend of a Belgian-style dark ale and Liefmans Kriek, an authentic cherry ale from Belgium. Cherry chestnut in color, it"s opaque but not cloudy with full carbonation topped by a smooth, tan head. Flavors and aromas of roasted malt, molasses and brown sugar, dark fruits, brandied raisins and chocolate, Three Philosophers has notable sweetness with low hop bitterness. The mid-palate shows a soft malt center which gives way to a dry, warm, wine-like finish. The complexity of this beer make it a good candidate for ageing gracefully, as spicy sherry and port notes should intensify. ABV = 9.7%
  • Hennepin Farmhouse Saison - A moderately hoppy, farmhouse-style ale with a champagne-like effervescence, Hennepin has a crisp start followed by malt sweetness balanced with a firm bitterness. Hennepin has a bounty of great flavors: ginger, spice, orange and toasted grain. Pouring a bright golden color with a spicy-sweet balance of orange peel, sweet malt, hops and ginger, Hennepin makes way for a dry finish with a slight bite of ginger. ABV = 7.7%
From DC Brau Brewing Company (Washington, D.C.):
  • The Corruption IPA - This award-winning beer uses a combination of Pale 2 Row, C-10, Honey Malt and Victory Malt with Columbus hops. Opens with pleasant aromas of pine sap and burnt spruce that pay homage to its Northwest inspiration. Modest flavors of toffee and sweet malt tease the tongue before 2lbs/barrel of Columbus hops overtake the palate with a torrent of resinous pine and notes of grapefruit zest. The malt backbone reemerges to temper the finish with lingering pine notes that leave the mouth watering for more of the pleasing copper-colored elixir. ABV = 6.5%
From Omnipollo (Stockholm, Sweden): Lustro Imperial IPA - Brewed at Dorchester Brewing Co in the USA. Aromas of biscuit malt with light mango pineapple and lemon hops. An absolutely delicious trpoical IPA. ABV = 8%
From Doc"s Draft Hard Cider (Warwick, NY): Pear - A traditional cider hand crafted from a select blend of apples and pears. Intense aromas of ripened pear dance from the glass. The taste is light and crisp with a clean, dry finish. ABV = 5.5%
