The above link shows the editorial that has appeared in The Wall Street Journal for decades now detailing the travails that our nation"s first settlers faced and the endurance they exhibited in forging a new nation. It has always brought me some perspective about difficult times when we face then and the commitment that others before us had to making their situation better.

This is an abbreviated edition of The Word. Some of you may find that you wish each successive newsletter was equally brief. I"m sorry, but I can"t commit to that. I have so much fun conveying information to you that I don"t know when to stop!!

But, at least for this week, you have something else to be thankful for.

For those of you not up to speed, Kate and I will be departing for Swissland on Wednesday evening to celebrate my daughter"s birthday and my grandson"s First Birthday (yes, he missed being born on his mother"s birth date by one hour). Talk about being thankful!!

Each of us at The Wine Cabinet are, in fact, very thankful for the loyalty and support that you, our patrons, have shown us over the last 14 years. We have a strong commitment to continue to work hard to exceed your expectations of us.

Deep ruby red in color with intriguing aromas of sun-warmed blackberries, ripe plums, with hints of black licorice. Acomplexity of dark berry fruits unfold on the palate; blackberries and bing cherries along with dark chocolate flavors.Vanilla and cedar oak undertones on the mid-palate further enhance the wine. The overall impression is rich with refined tannins, firm acidity and explosive layers of ripe fruit.

Belle Glos showcases distinctive Pinot Noirs produced from some of California’s top wine-growing regions. The vineyard locations can all be described as coastal, but the climate differences are significant, depending on the amount of fog, wind, sunlight, and soil type at each site. Each wine is crafted to the purest essence of the vineyard into elegant expressions of California Pinot Noir. Winemaker Joseph Wagner chose the name Belle Glos (pronounced BELL GLOSS) to honor his grandmother, Lorna Belle Glos Wagner, a co-founder of Caymus Vineyards. Belle Glos is part of the famed Wagner family of wines. Crafting handmade wine since the 1800"s (over five family generations) with the names Caymus, Mer Soleil, Conundrum and ,of course, Belle Glos. Always highly rated and sought after, these wines set the standard of excellence by which California wines can be judged.

Las Alturas, meaning “the heights”, is planted at one of the highest vineyard sites in the Santa Lucia Highlands. At this elevation, the sunny but very cool climate creates a wine with intense hallmarks of this coastal region: robust, expressive, full-bodied and balanced with a firm acidity.

In 1971 Charles F. (Charlie) Wagner and his wife Lorna Belle Glos Wagner asked their son Charles J. (Chuck) Wagner, who had just graduated from high school, if he would be interested in joining them in starting up a winery. If Chuck declined the offer, Charlie and Lorna were planning to sell out of their ranch in Napa Valley and move to Australia. Chuck accepted his parents’ offer to launch the winery, Caymus Vineyards.

The Wagners produced their first vintage in 1972, consisting of 240 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon. Since then, Caymus has focused their efforts in the production of quality Cabernet Sauvignon. Today’s production is 65,000 cases.

Caymus Vineyards remains 100% family-owned by the Wagners. Charlie, Lorna Belle, and Chuck worked together as a remarkable team for over 30 years building Caymus Cabernet. Today, Chuck, his two sons, Charlie and Joe, and one daughter, Jenny, have joined the family team. Farming grapes remain the priority with the family farming about 350 acres of choice Napa Valley land.

The Wagners took the name Caymus from the Mexican land grant known as Rancho Caymus, given to George Yount in 1836, which encompassed what eventually became the town of Rutherford and much of the surrounding area.

For five generations, my family has lived and loved the Napa Valley. Our grandfather settled here in the 1800s and from that moment forward, we"ve grown to understand there is simply no substitute for an intimate knowledge of the land that only comes by "living" in the vineyard. Working the land with our own hands has given us insights into California winemaking that can"t be found in any book or corporate farm manual.

Chuck Wagner continues to direct the world-reknown Cabernet program at Caymus Vineyards in Napa Valley; Charlie is making exquisite Chardonnay at Mer Soleil in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey County; Joseph is making fine Pinot Noir under the Belle Glos label in the coastal areas of California; Jenny is learning the ropes here at Caymus and ah yes, our longtime winemaker for Conundrum, Jon Bolta, continues his craft of making that puzzling, white wine blend.
