"This entry level cuvée is finished with a screw cap, and pulled from a mix of barrels and clones from across the estate.
It"s forward, fruity and big, like an especially bold Beaujolais. Along with primary berry fruit there are light touches of pine needle and chocolate.
It"s full bodied and ready to go with your winter meal"s roasted fowl.""

Bodegas Enrique Mendoza
 La TREMENDA
2014
Alicante,Spain
100% Monastrell

This Monastrell, called Mourvèdre elsewhere in the world, is just an incredible value and a fine example of why you shop with us.

Rated by Forbes as one of the
“10 Best European Red Wines Under $20:

"
BODEGAS ENRIQUE MENDOZA La TREMENDA 2014
If there’s a fitting example at just how much wine you can get for your dollar from Spain, this is it. Mendoza’s entry level Monastrell, offers a high bang for the buck and emphasis on bright fresh fruit flavors and aromas. The wine comes from thirty year old vines at an elevation of two thousand feet. The wine spent six months in neutral American oak barrels (used two to three times) and the resulting wine offers aromas of cola, baking spice and dusty ripe raspberry. The palate is lively, fresh and loaded with red fruit, tobacco and cocoa nibs. What an incredible bargain.”

92 Points! The Wine Advocate

"So I only tasted two Monastrell bottlings, starting with the 2014 La Tremenda, the entry-level cuvée from different vineyards in the surroundings of their estate El Chaconero in the village of Villena. In 2010 they started producing Fondillón, the sweet Monastrell from the zone, so the riper bunches from these vineyards are kept for the Fondillón, which has had an effect on the dry Monastrell wines: more freshness and less overripe notes. This wine has six months in used 500-liter barrels and a variable time in vat, between six months and one year. The 2014 feels very tender, it has the esparto grass austerity of the stony vineyards with the chalky soils and a myriad of Mediterranean herbs. They used some stems for the fermentation, which added a fine thread and makes it subtly textured. It has the dusty tannins and the saline tastiness of the limestone soils. It represents a superb value and a great introduction to the Monastrell from Alicante; the price is hard to believe.”

Our Thoughts on this wine.....

A gorgeous, breezy, uplifting Monastrell that spends six months in barrel. It’s wonderfully pure with an abundance of fruits such as red cherries and a subtly spicy frame to the palate and just a touch of grip that offers black cherry, dark chocolate, light earth at the end of the long finish.

A bit about Enrique Mendoza.....

Although Enrique Mendoza founded the winery in 1989, his son Pepe now runs the business, aided by his younger brother Julián. Pepe is responsible for vineyard management and winemaking, while Julián looks after the commercial side of the company.

So well respected is Enrique Mendoza that it was inducted into the prestigious Grandes Pagos de España. This group’s mission is to defend and propagate the culture of “pago” wine, meaning wine produced in a specific terroir that reflects the distinct personality of the soil and climate. To become a member, a vineyard must surpass strict quality standards and also exhibit a degree of uniqueness in terms of soil, climate or grape variety that sets it apart from the surrounding area. The association’s membership includes 25 estate wineries throughout Spain.

Location of Vineyard
Bodegas Enrique Mendoza is located near the town of Alfàs Del Pi, about 45 miles from the city of Alicante, and is surrounded by breathtakingly landscaped gardens. Most of the vineyards are located near Villena at an average of 1200 feet elevation, with some parcels as high as 2100 feet. Traditional plantings include Monastrell and Moscatel, although recently Pepe has experimented with international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The resulting wines are typically fermented in stainless steel and aged in French oak, with long maceration (up to 28 days).

Winemaking Philosophy
Natural farming is prioritized at Enrique Mendoza. Indigenous yeasts are used, and insecticides, herbicides and fertilizers are avoided in favor of biodynamic practices. Pepe also emphasizes placing his vines under the optimal level of hydric stress to produce small, concentrated grapes; he uses computerized sensors to

monitors moisture levels in the vineyard, adjusting irrigation accordingly.

José (Pepe) Enrique Mendoza Gracia has been participating in wine production from a young age, helping with harvest and grape pressing (using a 300-year-old, Roman-style wine press) at Bodegas Enrique Mendoza. After declaring his vocation of oenology in secondary school, Pepe continued his studies at the Félix Jiménez de Requena School of Viticulture and Enology, and carried out his practicum with the Raimat and Masia Bach group. He was the first Spanish winemaker to work in New Zealand, where he worked Grove Mill in Marlborough Valley. He later worked in Argentina with Altavista and Achaval-Ferrer. In 1990, Pepe returned to Spain to manage Bodegas Enrique Mendoza with the help of his brother, Julián. Now a part of a new generation of winegrowers, Pepe’s fundamental objective at Enrique Mendoza is to attain grapes of the highest quality. All of the plants are nurtured using compost fertilizer and environmentally friendly practices, without insecticides or herbicides. Pepe’s belief is that great wine comes from a great vineyard.

Genuine Craftsmanship for Everyday Indulgence
Go with Your Palate!

With a focus on innovation and genuine craftsmanship, Copper Cane Wines & Provisions houses a collection of brands that are crafted to offer a touch of luxury for everyday indulgence. The current portfolio includes: Elouan Pinot Noir from Oregon, Belle Glos Pinot Noirs from prime California coastal vineyards, Beran Zinfandels of California, Carne Humana Red and White Blends from Napa Valley, and Steorra, a Brut Sparkling wine made of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown in Sonoma County’s prestigious Russian River Valley. Copper Cane is also home to Avrae, a premium line of cigars; and Mia Marcelle, a luxurious swimwear collection.

The Wines!!

Steorra Brut, NV Sparkling $24.99
lover of champagne, Joe Wagner has long wanted to create a classic sparkling wine using Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit. It’s Steorra, his first-ever sparkling wine, takes its name from the Old English word for ‘star’ and is a non-vintage Brut style sparkling sourced from Sonoma County’s cool-climate Russian River Valley esteemed for these grape varieties. Steorra is made in an elegant soft style with a fine bead and universally appealing flavors of lemon sherbet, luscious cream, subtle toastiness and a fresh finish.

Carne Humana White $22.99
Fresh and crisp with pear and subtle citrus flavors, tropical highlights, and a slightly creamy mouth feel that gives way to a long, bright and clean finish.

Belle Clos Pinot Noir, Clarke & Telephone $49.99
Aromas of plum, cinnamon and clove are complemented by flavors of ripe blackberry, raspberry, sweet baking spices, along with velvety tannins and a smooth toasty finish.

Beran, California Zinfandel $24.99
We find extraordinary fruit growing in Sonoma County, Napa Valley, the desolate Sierra foothills of Amador County and other regions of California to make Zinfandels worthy of this grape’s long and illustrious history in the state. Beran—The Bear—is forever a figure of strength and headstrong drive. This same power and conviction stands behind our Zinfandels which we source and make without compromise.

Napa Valley Quilt, Cabernet Sauvignon $49.99
Drawing from a patchwork of six prime Napa Valley AVAs to create full-bodied, rich, and decadent wines, Quilt exemplifies the classic structure of wines from the region, while the blending of fruit from a variety of vineyards allows the wines to maintain more complexity and a better style consistency from vintage to vintage.
Blackberry preserves, stewed rhubarb, hazelnut and charred meat with notes of dark licorice, vanillin and spice. Decadent chocolate brownie, yogurt and molasses flavors are in perfect balance with the high-toned fruit.

The Wines!!

Los Morros Sauvignon Blanc 2016 $12.99
Miguel Besoain left Chile to study in Burgundy and then worked throughout Europe for 10 years to hone his winemaking talents. He returned to his family land among the rolling hills of the Andes in Maipo Valley. Expressive and excellent varietal tipicity, Los Morros Sauvignon Blanc brings passion fruit and apricots notes.

Bueyes Extra Brut Sparkling Malbec Rosé 2016 $20.99
Don’t cry for Argentina because we bring you this elegant sparkling wine that makes any time a celebration. Notes of raspberry, cherry, citrus and apricot. Fine bubbles and great freshness.

Jofré “Frios del Año Tinto” 2016 $25.99
An unusual-for-Chile blend of Malbec, Tempranillo, and Cariñena. Think of Beaujolais with tannin structure: black berries, red currants, dried porcini, black licorice and chai tea. A tasty bistro wine, Tinto pairs well with steak-frites, roast chicken and grilled veg plus everything else you find at a classic bistro!

Coronas del Sur Carmenere 2015 $13.99
At the hands of Alejandro Jofré, this Curico Valley Carmenere nods to Chinon with its vibrant red fruit, hints of fresh herbs and dry tannins. Nicely balanced between acid, fruit and tannins, it calls for a steak or shepherd’s pie and is equally tasty with lentils and stuffed mushrooms.

Lafken Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 $25.99
45 barrels from two specific blocks on Miguel’s property in the Andes foothills. Visually brilliant and dark with ripe berries and white flowers mixed in spices of clove and cinnamon with a caramel and nutty richness. Decadent with finesse, not overblown. A must-taste example what the young generation of winemakers are crafting.

The Beer Shelves.......

We are enjoying all the Commonwealth Brewing beers we got in especially the new release Oranjelo! Pumpkin beers are tasting more appropriate as we move into this perfect weather!
Come on in and enjoy with us!

As always, check us out on Facebook   for a more detailed list (and photos!).

Commonwealth Big Papi Double IPA: Super fresh! "Pours murky orange with thick dense white head that stands. Tons oflacing. Mild aromas of pineapple and mango with a hint of malt. The aroma is light but you can tell this is a juicy IPA. Also picking up some grapefruit and a touch of orange. Wow this thing is juicy, it actually tastes almost like pineapple juice but not as syrupy. Lots of pineapple, mango, passionfruit. The taste is amazing. Medium bodied no sign of the 8% ABV ast all, I figured it would be pretty dry but it is not, very smooth. An excellent DIPA, wonderful flavors, the aroma just hints at what is waiting when you taste it."

Off Color Brewing Le Woof  Bière de Garde: This beer is a clear gold with a white head of foam. Decent head retention. The aroma is doughy and nutty. I get notes of baklava. Nuts and honey. Sweet and a little boozy. Honeycomb. Syrupy mouthfeel. Medium to high carbonation. Thicker mouthfeel.

Commonwealth Brewing Oranjelo American IPA: Oranjelo is new at 6.4% abv El Dorado and Columbus IPA conditioned with orange citrus. This one is super soft and bright and fresh. Just canned a week ago yesterday! This one is going to go fast!

Goose Island Matilda Belgian Style Pale Ale:
94 Points Ratebeer - Bottle conditioned. Matilda is made with a rare yeast that suggests a fruity and spicy flavor. There is complex maltiness balanced with a profuse amount of hops. Cloudy, orangey, dark golden to amber colour with average, frothy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Minimally bretty, funky yeasty, minimally bready, caramel malty and fruity aroma, hints of honey, gingerbread, honeydew melon, a touch of gooseberry. Taste is moderately dry, slightly grassy hoppy, minimally bready malty, hints of honeydew melon, a touch of gingerbread and clove; slightly creamy texture, minimally sweet-ish, sticky palate. Quite manifold and complex, somehow a bit to clean and engineer’d.

De Dochter van de Korenaar Embrasse Peated Oak Aged Ardbeg:
96 points Ratebeer - Pours dark brown, almost black with a smooth head. Aroma of berries, ripe fruits, hints of oak, wood, peat, whisky and leather. Taste is sweet, malty and slightly yeasty with some berries, toffee, ripe fruits, raisins, oak, wood, leather and peat. Finish is sweet, malty and earthy with loads of ripe fruits, berries, raisins, hints of yeast, leather, peat and wood.

Kate’s Pasta Alla Norma
A Typical Sicilian Dish

Ingredients

  • 1 pound/450 g penne rigate pasta or your own favorite!! It works with Linguine and Rotini, too!
  • 4 tablespoons/5 ml, extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra for deep-frying eggplant
  • 1/2 white onion, chopped
  • 1 (14-ounce/400 g) can peeled plum tomatoes
  • 1 Tbsp Sugar
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 small-size eggplant, 1” cubed
  • Fresh basil leaves, torn or coarsely chopped
  • Ricotta salata cheese, freshly grated
  • Ciabatta loaf, warm and crunchy

Directions

  • Cook the penne in a pot of boiling salted water. Stir to prevent the pasta from sticking together. While the pasta is cooking, saute’ the eggplant. Heat olive oil and fry the eggplant cubes until golden.
  • Drain the eggplant cubes on a paper towel to remove the excess oil. You’ll use this pan to make the sauce.
  • To make the sauce: In a saucepan, heat up 4 tablespoons of olive oil. Gently sauté the chopped onions until tender, then add the plum tomatoes and liquid from the can. With your hand, crush the tomatoes into little chunks. Add the sugar.
  • Season the sauce with salt, and red pepper flakes, to taste. Cook the tomato sauce for a few minutes, until the sauce has thickened.
  • In the pan you used to cook the pasta,
  • Add the drained pasta, which you cooked approximately 2 minutes before the "al dente" stage. Finish cooking the pasta in the sauce. Add the fried eggplant, basil leaves. Mix the ingredients together well in the saucepan so that the pasta and the sauce are well combined. Be careful not to overcook or break up the pasta.
  • Transfer the pasta to a warm serving bowl or divide the pasta among warm plates and sprinkle ricotta salata generously on top and serve immediately with a large piece of crusty Italian Ciabatta.
