Dear Subscriber

“No act of kindness,
no matter how small,
is ever wasted”
Aesop

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the people of the greater Houston area. Way back in the early eighties I lived in Houston for about three years and as I watched the news it saddened me to see so many areas I am familiar with completely devastated. I still have friends and family there who so far have been unaffected but are helping those less fortunate.
On the thankful for small favors front I am pleased to report that our own alumnus Nancy A’s home was still high and dry as of yesterday. She is in good spirits or maybe she said she was hitting the spirits in either case she sounded well!

This is a historic winery that was founded in 1894. The winery lies in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa, the most prestigious sub-region of Rioja. Our Thoughts on this wine.....

Of great elegance and complexity. A layer of ripe fruit aromas stands out at first, with notes of dried flower petals, and the finish is of elegant hints of spices such as ginger and cinnamon resulting from ageing in noble French oak. A wine with great character, enveloping and muscular, but at the same time delicate and elegant with fine tannins of great quality. The finish is very long with mint chocolate highlights.

A bit about Bodegas Palacio......

Based in the lower part of Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa) since 1894, Bodegas Palacio is one of the ancient jewels of the Denomination. With brands such as Castillo de Rioja and Glorioso dating from the 20th century, it boasts a rich history full of anecdotes and prominent events.

Founder Cosme Palacio rented a winery in the Duero area to procure wine when phylloxera devastaded Rioja. That winery was Vega Sicilia and the winemaker who travelled there to oversee production was Txomin Garramiola, a Riojan who settled in the region and laid the foundations of what today is the legendary Único.

In the 1980s the winery played a decisive role in the modernization of Rioja wines when a very young Michel Rolland was hired to help create Cosme Palacio red, aged entirely in French oak. The fruity character brought along a new style and meant that, for the first time, the top bottling in the winery was not a Reserva or Gran Reserva, but a simple Crianza. The reason: the use of new barrels reduced aging times. The Palacio family owned the winery until it was purchased by Domecq, which would soon be taken over by the Seagram corporation. In 1985 it was purchased by a group of investors led by Frenchman Jean Gervais and since 1998 it belongs to Hijos de Antonio Barceló – integrated in Acciona corporation–, with wineries in Ribera del Duero (Viña Mayor), Toro (Anzil), Rueda (Castillo de Dueñas), Castilla y León (Barceló Estates and Peñascal).

The two main ranges are based on brands Glorioso and Cosme Palacio. The first represents excellent value for money and includes Tempranillos such as the Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. It is not as classic as it might seem at first sight and, although it shows moderate structure, it is fruit-driven and aged entirely in French oak.

Cosme Palacio wines show more consistency and balance. The brand is a tribute to the founder and comprises a barrel-fermented white, a Reserva and a great value for money red Crianza. Offering a higher quality than the average Crianza, it sits comfortably amid some good generic wines in the DO. Two higher quality labels without age indication have joined this range recently. They are both called Cosme Palacio 1894, a date that marks the winery"s foundation date. The red ) is blended with Graciano whereas the opulent white has Viura and Malvasía fermented and aged in barrel.

Bodegas Palacio Reserva Especial is made from their oldest Tempranillo vines and has been aged in French oak for 20 months. It precedes the 1894 series, whose arrival has somehow crowded the premium level, specially taking into account the excellent quality of Cosme Palacio Crianza vintage after vintage.

The Wines!!

Kennedy Point Sauvignon Blanc 2015
Kennedy Point Vineyard makes a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc that captures the essence of the regional fruit. The grapes, grown in the hot, stony soils of the Wairau, produce a wine redolent of fresh cut wild flowers and a full palate of passion fruit, gooseberry and citrus.

Lexicon Chardonnay 2015
An aggressively oaky aroma, like fresh-sawn boards and lacquer, goes along with the deep-gold color and flavors of butter, vanilla and heavy cardamom and nutmeg. It"s full bodied, dry and extreme in style.

Dom. Manor Du Clara “Fleurie” Montee de la Tonne 2015

91 Points Vinous
"Bright ruby. Ripe and energetic on the nose, showing excellent clarity and lift to the ripe raspberry, cherry and floral pastille scents. Palate-staining red and blue fruit and lavender flavors are sharpened by suggestions of smoky minerals and white pepper. Smoothly plays richness off vivacity and finishes long and vibrant, leaving a sweet black raspberry note behind. - Josh Raynolds"-

Thorn-Clarke Shotfire Quartage 2013
Deep red with brick hues. Lifted berry, cinnamon, nutmeg and dried oregano aromas. The palate doesn’t disappoint with a multitude of flavours melding together to form the wines flavour, starting with red berries and anise. On release the tannins for the fruit and oak are firm and long, the generosity of fruit is balanced by an elegance provided by natural acidity. The wine is full bodied and complete.

Klinker Brick Zinfandel 2013
Candylike oak aromas and flavors dominate this full-bodied and rather tannic wine. It smells and tastes like vanilla, fresh-sawn oak and maple syrup. Some ripe plum flavors in the background are nearly sweet.

The Wines!!

 Lora (Miguel Merino) White Blend
A blend of the Spanish grape Verdejo and the international Sauvignon Blanc. Beautiful pale white colour with green hints. Tropical fruits and floral aromas on the nose of this delicate, savoury organic white wine. Dry, smooth and elegant, with great balance and length.

Lora (Miguel Merino) Red Blend
A harmonic combination of Tempranillo and Syrah with a touch of Merlot. Bright ruby-coloured, this wine has an excellent nose of violets, black cherry and earth notes. Its ageing in oak barrels gives the wine spicy aromas such as vanilla, pepper and toasty notes. On the palate it is soft and silky, delicate and round, with great balance between fruit, oak and spiciness.

Miguel Merino Rioja Jovenes 2011

Few producers highlight a wine coming from young vines. But Miguel Merino wants to stress that young vines have their advantages. Winemakers have always made their aged wines from older vines to take advantage of the structure, fruit, and complexity that comes from older vines. Here we have a "young" wine with all the characteristics of a young Rioja: red fruit, freshness, and a zippity-do-da acidity.

Miguel Merino Rioja Reserva 2007

 94 points Tim Atkin
"Combining fruit from two vineyards planted in the 1960s, this is a Tempranillo-based blend with a splash of Graciano and Mazuelo for extra acidity. Deeply coloured, with savoury black fruits, some dried herbs, attractive oak and a chalky, mineral flourish

It"s all about the Beer.......

With the cool weather rolling in this week, the perfect mix of summer and early fall beers has arrived at The Wine Cabinet. This week we have the first of our Autumn beers and some fun stuff for Octoberfest, including the Oxtobier from Old OX.  Get it here before its released at the brewery on September 8th!
However, Summer isn’t quite over yet so if, like us, you are still holding on to that last bit of the season, we have an exciting collaboration from Stone, Beavertown, and Garage Project, named Frutalica, as well as the new Funky Face from Old OX and The Wanderer (another great sour) from The Bruery. For the in-betweens, we are excited for Space Cake an IPA from Clown Shoes (Eclipse anyone?).  For those of you really excited for the cooler weather, we have a new limited release of The Bruery’s Midnight Autumn Maple: a dark ale version of the Classic and Pecan Pie Porter from Two Clowns.

As always, check us out on Facebook
for a more detailed list and photos!

New From Old OX Oxtober Marzen Style Lager
Oxtober Bier is a Märzen-style lager in the true German tradition. Vienna malts and nice toastiness drive the flavor. Very clean, smooth, and malt forward with rounded malt sweetness accompanied by nice biscuit and toast accents. A pleasant hop bitterness adds balance.

New from The Bruery  The Wanderer Barrel Aged Blackberry Sour
The Wanderer is a special blend of oak aged ales that we made with Craig and Beth from San Francisco’s City Beer Store. Blending a mix of sour ales and our anniversary ale the base of this beer has a delightfully sour tinge on top of a hearty malt backbone. To add to the flavor, Craig and Beth selected blackberries and bing cherries to be added to the ale adding to its already fruity complexity. This ale went on to win the silver medal for wood & barrel aged sour fruited ales at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival.

New from The Bruery   Midnight Autumn Maple Imperial Dark Ale with Yams and Molasses
The nights are getting darker and autumn is in its element. This variation of our fall seasonal brings both forces together for a limited time. Midnight Autumn Maple is a dark imperial ale brewed with midnight wheat, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, maple syrup and a whole lot of yams.

New from Clown Shoes Secret Space Cake Double IPA
Why are Miracle Mike and his dog, Bionic, being chased by many evil laser beam shooting cupackes and two giant layer cake mother ships?  Because we’re straight up lunatic fools?  Well, maybe, but with a few brain cells remaining we managed to craft Space Cake double IPA, utilizing citrusy Mosaic hops and an immaculate West Coast style malt backbone.  Dude… chill out.  Enjoy some Space Cake.

New collaboration from BEAVERTOWN / GARAGE PROJECT / STONE FRUITALLICA Fruitallica Tropical IPA
Glorious-crank-it-to-‘11’-cacophony is what happens when intense tropical fruit gets a flashpot addition of pyrotechnic heat from habanero. The result is a literal world tour, as three globe-trotting breweries collaborated on this immensely thunderous soundstorm of a beer.

Just to remind you of the ongoing opportunities we have:

Thursday Evening Open Bottle 4:00 - 8:00 pm - 1 wine rated highly and discounted generously;
