Dear Subscriber

Today is June 29  and it is...

National Handshake Day!!!!

The last Thursday of each June, people across the nation observe National Handshake Day.

Of all the various forms of greeting, the handshake is perhaps one of the most ancient.

The origin of the handshake is hard to pinpoint. As it is a non-verbal mode of communication, it may have existed before written records. Theories suggest it was a way for medieval knights, Roman soldiers and other weapon carrying men to check for hidden daggers by grasping each other’s forearms in greeting.

Archaeological ruins in ancient Greece support this theory. The funerary stele depicts two soldiers shaking hands and dates back to 5th century BC.

An even older record in Egypt suggests the handshake held a different sort of power, the power of giving. According to Babylonian custom, kings would grasp the hand of the statue of the god Marduk before taking the throne. This act was repeated annually during the festival of Zagmuk to carry his power over into the next year. Even conquering Assyria continued the tradition.

Whatever the history, few things can bring a sense of civility as a handshake does. It"s not easy to extend oneself in welcome. the act causes a change in the mental approach to an individual and makes it almost impossible to carry an aggressive attitude forward.

We hope that when we interact with each of you that the sense of welcome and friendship is apparent in all that we do. We all have bad moments from time to time, but we trust that you"ll call us on it, if we ever seem anything other than glad to see you!!

For those of you to whom we haven"t had the chance to mention it, Tomorrow is Oskar arrival Day! Shown nearby as the only one with little or no interest in the camera unless he can get it to his mouth.  He arrives via Swiss Air in the company of my daughter and son-in-law, whom I am almost certain, will be more than happy to pass him off to the grandparents so that they can regain a bit of sanity!! Ten hours on a transatlantic flight with a 7 month old is an experience that I don"t believe I will ever have!

Don"t worry we"ll bring him by the shop with some regularity!

We look forward to seeing you this weekend!!

Don"t forget that we can chill a bottle for your arrival if you give us a call. And we"re more than happy to match up wines and dinner menus!!
And we love doing it!!

Have a great weekend!! And stay up to date with us on Facebook!

Always Drink Responsibly.

Saturday: Virginia Imports, Tatiana El Shafie: The wines of Charles Krug (purchased by the Mondavi Family in the 1920"s and still run by Peter"s family (Robert"s brother) have been iconic since they opened the first tasting room in California in 1882.
More modern , but no less excellent are the wines of Cass from Paso Robles.
It will be a heck of a day to taste!!

The Beerman: Dave is particularly excited this week!! Commonwealth is rapidly building a reputation as on of the best microbreweries in the East. Modern Times is no less sought after.

We love this wine so much that on our Opening Day in October of 2003 we served this wine (2000 Vintage) out of a Jeroboam (3 liter) bottle to all who attended our opening party!
A few years later Pete Seghesio came in town to pour in the shop….boy was that a night!

Our Thoughts.......

This pitch black colored Zinfandel from Seghesio opens with a fragrant and attractive black raspberry bouquet with a hint of boysenberry. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, acidic and very juicy. The flavor profile is an extracted blackberry with notes of black licorice and minerality. I also detected hints of blackberry jam and black pepper. The finish is dry and its acidity and fruit flavors are nicely extended. This jammy Zin would pair nicely with Beef, BBQ or anything on the grill.

About Seghesio........

CELEBRATING FIVE GENERATIONS AND OVER 120 YEARS

2017 marks Seghesio Family Vineyards’ 122nd Anniversary in Sonoma

County. As one of the very few California wineries that can lay claim to a history of more than a century, we see this as an anniversary to be celebrated and an opportunity to recognize and share our history with family, friends and customers.

In many ways the story of Seghesio Family Vineyards is the story of the Sonoma County wine industry. It begins with the vision and determination of immigrants and continues through the hardship of Prohibition and the challenges of survival in the 20th and 21st century. It is the story of one family’s adaptation and reinvention, not once, but multiple times. Most of all it is the story of the values we hold dear: heritage, tradition and community. Through five generations and 120 years, Seghesio Family Vineyards has been proud to be part of the vibrant history and fabric of Sonoma County

Seghesio Family Vineyards was established in 1895 when Italian immigrant and winemaker Edoardo Seghesio planted his first Zinfandel vineyard in what is now Seghesio’s Home Ranch Vineyard in Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley. Edoardo and his wife Angela continued to tend their vineyards through Prohibition and were one of approximately 100 wineries to survive that era. Post-prohibition, Seghesio was a key supplier of grapes and bulk wine to large California wineries.

The modern era saw fourth generation family member Ted Seghesio make the first wines under the Seghesio label. Under the leadership and guidance of Ted and his cousin Pete, Seghesio Family Vineyards has become renowned for exceptional Zinfandels and Italian varietals.

In 2011 Seghesio Family Vineyards joined Crimson Wine Group. Today, in addition to Ted as winemaker and Pete as Ambassador, several members of the Seghesio family hold positions, both in the vineyards and winery, including fifth generation family member Ned Neumiller who serves as Seghesio’s Grower Relations & Viticulture Manager.

The Wines!!!
A wine for every wine lover.

Great wine knows no boundaries. That’s why we leave no rock (or region) unturned in our pursuit of the best wines we can find. From Napa Valley to New Zealand, we’ve acquired an expansive portfolio of wine that over-delivers every time. Our wines range from $10 up to $40, so we can truly offer a wine for wine lovers of all kinds.

Riesling $13.99
Fragrant aromas of white peach, nectaring and Bosc pear backed by pastoral scents of hay or straw. Slightly sweet and refreshingly juicy, you may just be inclined to sip it faster than a Maybach on the autobahn.

Chardonnay, Chalone Appelation $15.99
Classically gold in color with fresh apple, pear, and tropical fruit aromas rising above softer flavors of honeysuckle, wet stones and cinnamon toast. These crazy flavors come together to make a dry, medium-bodied Chardonnay that"s both smooth and refreshing.

Shiraz $12.99

Inky in color with seductive aromas of spicy, dark fruit and perfumed plums. The wine is full-bodied, round and juicy with subtle trails of vanilla in the finish. You"ll love a glass with savory short ribs, hearty stews, or a juicy cheeseburger off the grill.

Monster Red Blend $24.99

Dark and dense with captivating aromas of black currant, roasted coffee, cedar and smoke with faint hints of fresh herbs and mint. Powerful, but impressively well poised. Serve with slow cooked pulled pork, grilled Portobello mushrooms, or some cave-aged Gruyere cheese.

Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville $27.99

Hearty aromas of black cherries, plums and tobacco leaf with traces of fresh pepper and sweet spice. The wine is full-bodied but focused, like a firm handshake that leads into a big hug. This is a Cab drinker"s kind of wine.

The Vineyards!!
Charles Krug
As the oldest winery in Napa, with more than 150 years of winemaking experience, Charles Krug is the ultimate wine country destination. Join us at our legendary estate and let us share our Napa Valley heritage with you.
The oldest winery is also home to the first tasting room in California. Opened by the Krug Family in 1882.

Cass Vineyards and Winery
?Cass  is located in the rolling, oak-studded hills between Paso Robles and Creston on California"s beautiful Central Coast. This area that the vineyard calls home offers quiet serenity for the visitor and an ideal growing environment for wine grapes.

Sited due east of the “Templeton Gap”, we receive the evening"s cooling breezes that the west side of Paso Robles is noted for. We also rest far enough from the coast to generate the heat needed to optimally ripen the Rhone varieties grown on our 145 acre estate vineyard. Visit us to experience the best of paso robles wineries.

The Wines!!!

Charles Krug Sauvignon Blanc $16.99
90 points Wine Enthusiast

Perfumed and expressive; enticing aromas of spiced pineapple, ripe plantain, golden apple and acacia flower leap from the glass. Fruit-driven yet refreshing, nuances of pear preserves, fresh apricot, crushed coconut and banana custard envelope the palate. The fruit remains pure through a smooth and persistent finish.  Enjoy Now.

Charles Krug Pinot Noir, Carneros $31.99This delicate Pinot Noir, from our Carneros - Napa Valley vineyard, has black cherry and candied raspberry aromas, enveloped by slight oak in the background. With featured flavors of sweet cherry, vanilla and raspberry, it has a long finish that is rounded out by a burst of cherry and cream soda.

Cass Hacienda Mourvedre $29.99

Lifted aromas of black cherry, red plum, savory spice and dusted violet are evident on the nose. The palate combines intensity and freshness, while revealing brushy nuances of bramble berry, wild blueberry, sweet tobacco and cardamom seed. Cass Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles $39.99

The Beerman.......

We"re getting in two great breweries in this week, Commonwealth Brewing, from Virginia Beach, and Modern Times from San Diego! These are both super fresh, small production breweries that produce beers perfect for summer and any relaxation activities!
A must try! Get on in here and grab some! -
Dave

As always, check us out on Facebook   for a more detailed list (and photos!).  - Dave

Commonwealth Mano Del Puma Mexican Cerveza: A super light cerveza made with flaked maize, the best noble hops and cold fermented with our house lager strain. Exceptionally smooth, clean and supremely sessional.  Enjoy by itself or garnish with a lime for an instant trip to the beach.
Commonwealth Big Papi Double IPA: The 8% big brother version of Papi Chulo, super juicy with low bitterness!

Commonwealth Ojo Del Tigre Amber Lager: A sleek, sublime maroon-hued Mexican style cerveza made with flaked maize, carefully selected German malts, the best noble hops and cold fermented with our house lager strain.  Exceptionally smooth, clean and full bodied but still supremely sessional.  Enjoy by itself or garnish with a lime for an instant trip to the beach.

Commonwealth Trouvaille Wine Barrel Sour Saison: This ‘lucky find’ is a saison aged over a year in white wine barrels, dry hopped with hallertau blanc, and bottle conditioned. It has soft effervescence with notes of Chardonnay, white grape skin, and fresh hay.

These will be here on Friday:
Modern Times Fortunate Islands Hoppy Wheat: Fortunate Islands combines the bangin" hop aroma of an über-tropical IPA with the crisp, deeply quenching drinkability of a killer pale ale. We achieve this magical result by starting with a mild, nutty malt backbone, then dry-hopping the bejesus out of it with Citra and Amarillo hops. Restrained bitterness and vibrant notes of mango, tangerine, and passionfruit combine to form a sessionable crusher of mind-bending proportions. It tastes like wizards.

Modern Times Fruitlands Passionfruit Guava Gose: Fruitlands is tart, fruity, & frighteningly delicious. The sour, salty base beer lays down the funky refreshment while a heavy dose of passion fruit and guava turns the whole thing into a wall-to-wall tropical fruit fiesta. It’s a marvelous mix of elements that collides with your mouth like a fruit-filled asteroid of flavor traveling at the supersonic speed of party.

Just to remind you of the ongoing opportunities we have:

Thursday Evening Open Bottle 4:00 - 8:00 pm - 1 wine rated highly and discounted generously;
