Dear Subscriber

Today is June 15  ...

And This Sunday is...

FATHER"S DAY!!!

While I realize that there would be no Father"s Day without the closely related Mother"s Day; the reverse certainly holds as well. They are a team and most everyone agrees.

Honestly, Mothers should get more recognition. They have been accorded the higher status even since Roman times when the ladies of the house were the actual owners of the land and the goods. (Of course! The Fathers had to go off and conquer the world. Somebody had to look after everything!)

Of course you"ve heard the one about the kid looking for a Father"s Day card who finally gave up and said to the Mom -
"I couldn"t find any with money in it!"

However, this Sunday we all get the chance to say
"Dad, we like you too." Let"s go play some golf; see a ball game; grill your favorite steaks or just chill on the deck.

Here"s your favorite Cab or IPA.

Relax. Enjoy.
It"s your last time in the spotlight until next year.

Our last Wine Club class is Tuesday June 20!

We"ll be sampling Summer Whites and talking about what it takes to make the list.

Don"t miss this last chance to enjoy kicking back with wine and friends in a relaxed atmosphere!!

 Call Today!

And Don"t forget to mark your calendar for our

Tuesday, June 27 Tasting
with the
Owner/Winemaker of Ancient Peaks Winery!!
5:30 - 7:30 pm!

We look forward to seeing you this weekend!!

Don"t forget that we can chill a bottle for your arrival if you give us a call. And we"re more than happy to match up wines and dinner menus!!
And we love doing it!!

Have a great weekend!! And stay up to date with us on Facebook!

Always Drink Responsibly.

It all starts Tonight with  Open Bottle Thursday!

"This is wine is beautifully made, with ripe blackberry, dark plum, dark chocolate, and floral notes on the nose.
Sweet ripe black and blue fruit on the palate, with hints of cassis, rustic earth tones, and spicy oak. Smooth on the finish, with mellow tannins and spice.
Elegant and integrated.
An ideal choice for a Prime Rib Roast, but well-suited to a plate of Charcuterie and hard cheeses.
"This wine meets wines priced at over $100 nose to nose."  -

This area has been back and forth between France and Germany for centuries, just as has Alsace and Lorraine. The natives have their own dialect and don"t really pay much attention to who has sovereignty at the moment. Think of these as Alsatian and enjoy!!

ROBERT MONDAVI
WINERY

 Oakville
BDX

(91% Cabernet Sauvignon 8% Cabernet Franc 1% Petit Verdot)

This "little brother" of Opus One was originally only offered to the Opus Wine Club. Even now it"s rarely seen for retail sale. Predominantly available in the very best Steakhouses and High end restaurants, it has been whispered about for quite some time.
This wine was chosen to accompany the lamb chops at the Vineyard"s 50th Anniversary Dinner.
Now"s your chance to sample and enjoy!!

"Classic Bordeaux varieties are ripened in Robert Mondavi’s sun blessed and ideally located To Kalon vineyard to provide a wine both firm in structure and rich in texture—a different expression of Oakville. Not produced every vintage, this special wine has deep, blackberry fruit with savory and white sage flavors balanced by sweet oak spices."

•VINTAGE•
Following two cooler and wetter growing seasons, the 2012 vintage was “a walk in the park”, says Vineyard Manager, Matt Ashby. A dry winter led to well-timed rain in March which saturated the soils and helped fill the reservoirs. The region’s combination of warm days and cool nights endured through the growing season creating the perfect recipe for long, flavor-building hang time and optimal sugar to acid balance. Grape picking took place on October 5th through October 26th.

 •VINEYARDS•
The prime benchland on the western side of the Oakville AVA is known for its well-draining soils, optimal sun exposure and relatively low fertility. Grapes grown here yield rich complex flavors and great fruit maturity. The To Kalon Vineyard is located in the heart of this prime area of Oakville and surrounds the Robert Mondavi Winery. It was named Vineyard of the Year by the California State Farm Bureau, the year before this wine’s grapes were harvested in 2011. Appellation: 100% Napa Valley Grape Sourcing : 80% To Kalon Vineyard, Oakville

•WINEMAKING•
Each grape variety was hand-harvested into small bins and carefully sorted in our gravity-flow cellar. The clusters were gently destemmed directly into traditional French oak tanks for cold soak, fermentation and extended maceration – a total of 34 days of wine to skin contact – maximizing the extraction of varietal character and complexity while keeping the tannins fleshy and supple. The new wines were drained and gently pressed into 55% new French-oak barrels for malolactic fermentation, assuring seamless integration of fruit and oak. The final blend was assembled through repeated tasting trials over the twenty-eight months of barrel aging. The wine was bottled in March, 2015.

The Mondavi Story

“Walking through To Kalon, admiring its contours and vines, smelling the richness of its soil, I knew this was a very special place. It exuded an indefinable quality I could not describe, a feeling that was almost mystical.”

— Robert Mondavi

Robert Mondavi established his namesake winery in 1966 with a vision to create Napa Valley wines that would stand in the company of the world’s finest. He chose To Kalon Vineyard in the heart of the Napa Valley as the home for Robert Mondavi Winery. This first-growth vineyard, located in Oakville, California, is renowned for producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world, as well as for its Sauvignon Blanc grapes, from which Mr. Mondavi crafted his signature wine, Fumé Blanc.

Along with To Kalon Vineyard, Robert Mondavi Winery sources grapes from some of Napa Valley’s finest vineyards, including Stag’s Leap (Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc) and Carneros (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay).

Mr. Mondavi believed that wines should reflect their origins, that they are the product of the soil, the climate, and the careful stewardship of those precious resources. He also believed in combining the newest techniques and technology with time-honored winemaking traditions.

Our winemaking and vineyard teams are proud to carry on our founder’s mandate to always strive higher, to pursue Robert Mondavi’s goal of excellence with the same passion and innovative spirit, moving forward with programs that break barriers and open new frontiers.

Leading this initiative is Genevieve Janssens, Director of Winemaking. Genevieve, whose relationship with the winery began in 1978, was selected Winemaker of the Year by Wine Enthusiast in 2010.

History

Over 100 years.
The Castellani’s business was established in Montecalvoli at the end of the 19th century as Alfred, long-standing wine grower, decides to start bottling and selling his wine. In 1903 the business is officially registered at the Chamber of Commerce in Pisa.

Philosophy
Concepts for wine"s expression.
Since 1903 my family has been exporting its own finest Estate wines from Tuscany. We have changed and evolved over the decades, but throughout the years the philosophy of our work has remained consistent: "The quality of the wine begins in the vineyard", as my ancestors used to say...

Saturday Afternoon Tasting

Max Evans
Siema Wines
presents
Rocche Costamagna Vineyards

The Vineyard!!

On May 15, 1841 the police office of the royal Military Command in Alba granted Luigi Costamagna, son of the estate’s founder Francesco Antonio Costamagna, an official license “to retail the wine produced from his own vineyards” in La Morra.
In 1911, Francesco Costamagna and his son Riccardo were awarded a gold medal at the “Gran Premio dell’Esposizione Internazionale di Torino” for fifty years of winemaking.
When Francesco died, his son Riccardo, an attorney, continued to manage the winery with the help of his wife Maddalena. When he died in the 1930s, Riccardo’s wife decided to sell the vineyards located outside La Morra. Wine was produced only for the family’s own consumption and some grapes were sold to other winemakers.
In the late 1960s, Maddalena’s niece, Claudia Ferraresi, together with her husband Giorgio Locatelli, restarted the commercial winemaking activity, planted new vineyards and modernised the old winery.
Since the mid 1980s their son Alessandro Locatelli has been managing the winery with the help of agronomist Gian Piero Romana and enologist Giuseppe Caviola.

Alessandro has improved the vineyards and wine-making techniques, he has been developing customer sales all over the world, and so carrying on the family tradition with passion and drawing on the wealth of experience gathered by the family.

Stillwater Wavvy Batch 1 A Rotationally Hopped Double IPA: OMG, I"m super excited about this one! No Ratings Yet! "Pours foggy hazy cloudy amber gold with lots of carbonation, and a creamy white foam head. Smells like white grape, gooseberry, apricot, cantaloupe, grapefruit, orange citrus, lemon, lime, pineapple, mango, peach, lactose, some creamsicle, biscuity malt, some spice, with dank floral resinous earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like bitter grape skins, gooseberry, white wine, apricot, cantaloupe, grapefruit, orange citrus, lemon, lime, tart pineapple, mango, peach, lactose, creamsicle, bready biscuity crackery malt, some spice, with dank floral resinous earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium bodied, creamy with moderate smooth carbonation. Overall a real nice double IPA with lactose."

Stone Unfiltered Enjoy By 7.04.17 Double IPA:
97 points from BeerAdvocate! "Pours a very hazy unfiltered orange with a little white head. Smells strongly of grapefruit, tropical fruits, and hops. Tastes of grapefruit, sweet tropical fruits, slightly bitter hops, and a little malt. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Overall this is an absolutely incredible IPA. I prefer this to the standard Enjoy By."

Stillwater Insetto Sour Ale with Plums:
Perfect for a hot day!!! "Just an absolutely amazing beer.... definitely tart but not overly sour, the plums give this a nice juicy aspect. Super refreshing while sitting by the pool. This is a perfect summer beer. I"m not a big fan of overly tart sours so this one is right up my alley. The fruit really really sets this off. This is delicious!"

Sierra Nevada Hoptimum Triple IPA:
92 points from BeerAdvocate! "Pours a beautiful clear amber color. It is the sort of beer you see pictures of and lust after. And it delivers upon drinking it, tasting as good as it looks. You can lust after this all day, and go home and successful satisfy that lust. Ahhhh! Aroma is of strong hops, like walking onto a hop farm, but one-dimensional. Taste is much more complex, with various hop flavors present. The recipe change has taken this from an interesting hop-bomb that I didn"t really have much interest in, to a complex hop bomb that I hope they produce every year. For lovers of hoppy beer, this is one of the best."

Evil Twin Bikini Beer Session IPA:
The absolute best session IPA! "Pours a very clear light orange-copper in color with a finger + of long lasting white head. Aroma is hoppy, citrus and pine, a bit dank; very inviting. Flavors are focused on dank hops. Very light body and moderate carbonation. Bottom line: this beer is crushable, lots of flavor packed in to just 2.7% ABV."
