2012  Jumilla, Spain

Yes, Syrah from Spain – Jumilla, specifically. But it’s just a jaunt up the coast to southern France, where the red variety rises to its greatest glory in the Rhône Valley. 85% Syrah 15% Monastrell  The 50 Barricas means the wine was blended from a selection of 50 barrels, aged for 6 months in new French and American oak.

92 Points! - The Wine Advocate

"The 2012 Alceno Premium, produced with Syrah grapes and with 15% Monastrell from stony, calcareous soils, is a selection of 50 barrels which aged in barrique for six months. Purple-colored, clean, fresh, expressive, with notes of smoky bacon, some peat, wood well-integrated, supple, balanced and with good acidity. It reminds me of a Mediterranean rendition of a Crozes-Hermitage. Clean and delineated. Silky texture integrated. 20,000 bottles. It represents good value and a good balance between youth and complexity. I’d drink it on the young side, to enjoy the exuberance of its fruit."

Our Thoughts on this wine.....

The first impression is perfumed red fruit, with a chewy core of plum and blackberry balanced by black pepper and lively acidity. The 50 Alceno drinks well above its price point, the blend is aged in new and American oak barrels for a few months. The wine shows a nice balance of ripe fruit, spices and oak notes. Reminiscent of Syrah from the Rhone, the nose is fresh and bright with aromas of smoke, raspberry, and bacon fat. Braised red meats, such as short ribs or lamb shanks, would do it proud.

Bodegas Alceno is a traditional family-owned winery located in Jumilla, considered to be the first winery in the DO to market wines commercially. The winery has been in operation since 1870 and was the first commercial winery in Spain"s Jumilla region.
Nowadays, the winery is owned by Bastida family and counts with new and modern techniques of wine making adapting the facilities and the whole process of elaboration to the latest quality demands. The taste of our wines is fit to our clients’ demand, so we can bring a part of our passion to their palate.

A bit about Jumilla…….

Jumilla is a Spanish D.O.P. wine region located two thirds the way down the country on the east coast and covers the northern area of Murcia, including the municipality of Jumilla - from which it takes its name and the adjoining southeast area of Albacete province in the Castile-La Mancha region.
The D.O.P. Jumilla (Protected Denomination of Origin) wine region comprises over 30,000ha of vineyards, of which 45% are located in the town of Jumilla and connects over 3000 registered grape-growers across the entire region. The region has 44 registered wineries (Bodegas), of which 80-85% are producing bottled wines - with the region producing around 24 million litres of wine annually.

Jumilla wines have a very rich history, as winemaking can be traced back to the Greeks and continued with the Romans until the Muslim invasion. Murcia was a very strong Muslim city (being called Mursiya) and following the Quran laws, the consumption of alcohol was banned. With most of the vines being pulled-out and the ones which remained were only used for fruit and Arrope (a thick sweet grape syrup).
After the expulsion or removal of the Moors, wine production re-commenced. However, trade was slow and very weak so during the 16th century winemaking was only practiced by a few passionate families. It was during the 17th century that Jumilla finally started to produce enough wine to sell.
During the phylloxera plague in the late 19th century, the region somehow escaped infection so a period of economic growth followed as wine merchants from France came to buy wine. For this reason vines were never grafted onto resistant rootstock as was the case for the rest of Europe. However the phylloxera pest unexpectedly struck in 1989, devastating vineyards and reducing production by 60% over the coming years. Grafting and re-planting was slow but allowed the region to introduce new methods of viticulture and winemaking. Before the more recent update of wine classifications and the D.O.P status - Jumilla is one of the oldest (Designated Origin) D.O.’s in Spain having acquired its official status in 1966.

The Winemakers!!

Lisa Steininger
We are a family business in Langenlois. Here in the Kamp valley, Grüner Veltliner has, for centuries, been living in perfect harmony with primary rock such as granite, gneiss and mica schist as well as loess soil. From an optimum terroir, perfectly ripe grapes and careful winemaking technology emerge dense, smooth and long-lived wines full of elegance.
In recent years, our vineyard has become known for our sparkling wine production. Since 1989, we have been using bottle fermentation, and, meanwhile, Sekt has become a cornerstone of our business. Our philosophy: the base wine determines the final product – good Sekt can only be made from good wine. Our goal: rediscovering the varietal character, the scent and the fruit of regional wines once again in Sekt.
LOISIUM World of Wine
Together with two other Langenlois families, we have realised a wine project of international standards amidst the vineyards behind our estate: the LOISIUM World of Wine Experience as well as an accompanying hotel.

Cultivated vineyards (hectares): 45 ha
Grape varieties: Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer, Muscat, Pinot Blanc, Zweigelt, Pinot Noir

Martin Mittelbach
The Mittelbach family‘s Tegernseerhof, located in Unterloiben, just below Dürnstein, boasts a tradition dating back to the year 1002. The original facilities were built in 1176 by the Benedictine community of the Tegernsee Abbey. For centuries, the abbey was where the Bavarian monastery produced its wine. At the turn of the 19th century, it was acquired by the Austrian Empire and later, it went into private ownership. Franz Mittelbach and his wife, Mathilde, are the fifth generation of Tegernseerhof owners. Since the 1970s, they have been continuously running the Tegernseerhof as a family business. Today, Martin Mittelbach, the son of Franz and Mathilde, is the current part of this history. The Tegernseerhof vineyards flourish on stone terraces whose verdant soil plays host to a rich variety of indigenous fauna. Among the best-known, excellent locations and wines are Bergdistel, Hoehereck and Loibenberg (for Grüner Veltliner) as well as Loibenberg, Steinertal and Kellerberg (for Riesling). Our Estate is a member of the exclusive association “Vinea Wachau”, therefore the vinification follows the strict regulations of the “Codex Wachau“.

30 hectares (75 acres) Wine Region Wagram: The Wagram, a 25-mile long and 100 foot high ridge between the towns of Krems and Tulln consists of thousands of years old gravel sediments of the ancient Danube River. Soil and Climate: Clay soils and loess soils predominate with occasional granite formations. These very thick layers of soil give the advantage for vines to develop deep roots, penetrate the ground intensely, thus being protected against dryness on one hand and being able to reach the minerals and sediments on the other hand. The westeast expansion of the Wagram results in the fact that the vineyards are oriented towards the south and thus can stretch out towards the sun. Yet, this west-east expansion running parallel with the Danube has further advantages. From the east, the mild Pannonian climate follows the Danube upstream while from the west and northwest cool air from the Waldviertel flows into the Danube Valley. It is exactly this interplay between warm and cool that makes the wines rich in finesse, multi-layered, and ensures an interesting combination of fruit and acidity. Production: The physiologically ripe grapes are harvested by hand and handled as gentle as possible. When grapes come in from the vineyards they are hand-selected on a sorter belt. A long period of extensive contact with the yeast makes the wines harmonious, ensuring that there is a quality balance between acidity and alcohol. As the wines are bottled relatively late they can mature slowly. This is exactly part of Anton Bauer‘s philosophy: Things need time to develop, and wine needs time as well.

The Wines!!

Eric Rodez Rose" Brut NV $59.99
Excellent wine. Beautiful clear coral colored wine. A mineral and citrus nose with some floral highlights. The mouth feel was creamy with tight soft bubbles. On the palate the structure was bright and tasted of rich earthy fruits and citrus notes.
Once again a solid performance from this beautiful rose.
Full, rich and round, acidity in check and maintains a nice balance. Very aromatic , salmon to copper pink in colour. Very good.

Domaine D"Eole Provence
In the heart of the South, where earth, wind and sunshine come together lies the Domaine d’Eole. For more than twenty years, Christian Raimont, owner, and Matthias Wimmer, oenologist, have undertaken the vine growing and wine making, always working to improve quality, in order to express this "terroir" blessed by the Gods. Every care is taken to produce typical wines of the South, rich in color, flavor and character:
*Organic farming, controlled by Ecocert since 1996, no treating with pesticides, no chemical fertilizers.
*Typical provencal varieties:  Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan,  Mourvèdre.
*Low production by severe pruning and “vendanges vertes” in summer.
*Manual harvesting at ideal maturity followed by a rigorous selection.

Domaine D"Eole Rose" "Eygalieres", Provence $19.99
Domaine D"Eole Cuvee "Tradition" Rouge $19.99
Domaine D"Eole Coteaux D"Aix en Provence $21.99

Domaine Phillipe Plantevin Cote du Rhone Villages $20.99
Harmony and elegance is excellent for this side of the Rhône Villages. This wine is a reflection of a climate that is contrasted between the mistral assault from the south and air vibrating under the Massif to the north. Lulled by the sound of cicadas, warmed by the rollers, the old vines patiently concentrate their juices.
Let your palate be carried by the subtle blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Mourvèdre grapes grown and fermented at the heart of the enclave of the Popes.

Is it summer or is it spring? I have absolutely no idea, but we have some great beers in for any type of weather! Rain or shine, we have any type of beer you can imagine! Come on in and I"ll show you around! Besides what we got in this week, on Monday the new Sierra Nevada Beer Camp 2017 will be in! It"s a must purchase for any beer lover! - Dave

Sixpoint Jammer Gose: Clear, bright gold body with bubbly head, quick dissipation. Very beachy aroma; saltiness on the front, light sugary fruit, hay, light sourness, refreshing overall. Extremely light body, salt presence, subtle touch of sweet juiciness, minimal malt presence. Overall a bright, super clean-finishing drink.

Firestone Walker Luponic Distortion IPA 006:
No Ratings Yet! "Now in rotation: Revolution No. 006, the latest release in Firestone Walker’s Luponic Distortion revolving hop series, featuring yet another trailblazing blend of distinctive hops. True to form, Luponic Distortion Revolution No. 006 is driven by a mix of seven different hop varieties, led by two hops grown in the up-and-coming region of Michigan."

The Bruery Saule Anniversary Ale:
No Ratings Yet! "Saule is French for “willow”, a traditional nine-year anniversary gift. Our ninth anniversary ale, Saule, follows in the footsteps of our anniversary releases before it, which are loosely based on an English-style old ale, fermented with our house yeast strain, aged in bourbon barrels and blended using the solera method. This means that a portion of each anniversary ale is saved in oak barrels and blended in with the next year’s production, providing more complexity and depth of character as the years go by. The result is layered in robust and complex flavors of toffee, caramel, dark fruit, vanilla and oak."

The Bruery & Funky Buddha Guava Libre: This sensory getaway transports you to a corner bodega with our friends at Funky Buddha in South Florida to recreate the flavors you’d find in a Cuban guava pastry. Championing the big, bold flavors that both of our breweries are known for, we brewed an imperial cream ale, adding lactose and vanilla to impart sweet, custard-like ribbons, and guava for filling its conceptual authenticity. It’s a collaboration that’s equal parts inspiration and admiration.
