Dear Subscriber

Today, May 18 is ...

National No Dirty Dishes Day

and

National Visit Your Relatives Day!

Now I"m not sure that it was a conscious effort to recognize these two disparate goals on the same day, but it does seem highly suspicious to me. The ironic beauty of not having any dirty dishes by foisting them off on your relatives (are they suggesting in-laws? - a group of characters that are often "less than fully loved".) is certainly a possibility.

Perhaps the suggestion is to take everyone out to breakfast, lunch and dinner? An expensive undertaking even should one decide to utilize the local diner.

Or, most insidious, perhaps the thought is that if you visit your relatives, you, and they, will lose whatever appetite you may have had and forego eating entirely!
In this case they should have made it National Fasting Day as well.

Nonetheless, we still believe that you should have a glass of wine or a chilled mug of beer and relax since exerting yourself too much during these early days of 90+ F can stress the body that has not yet fully adjusted to the warmer clime of June, July and August.

(PS. It"s also American Craft Beer Week!)

We hope we can help.

What are you waiting for??

We look forward to seeing you this weekend!!

Don"t forget that we can chill a bottle for your arrival if you give us a call. And we"re more than happy to match up wines and dinner menus!!
And we love doing it!!

Have a great weekend!! And stay up to date with us on Facebook!

Friday: Elite Wine Imports, Hughes Beaulieu: As many of you know, Hughes has a long and successful career with wine. Perhaps the accent makes the wine taste just that much better, or perhaps it"s his deep knowledge of the stories behind the wines. It could be that he just loves what he does so much that it spills over to the wines! Come in and figure it out for yourself!!

Saturday: Rande is pouring some of the current favorites!: We had a last minute cancelation from one of our suppliers, so we figured we might as well have some fun showing off the wines that are moving quickly through the shop as we march relentlessly from spring to summer (90 F??)!

The Beerman: Dave seems to have an uncanny ability to make good selections. His pick for a Mother"s Day present went over very well - a statue of St. Francis Assisi - and nothing is more appreciative than a happy Mom, with the possible exception of a happy Gram (and she was with the pictures of Oskar!)!!

Yes, of course, Dave does it with the beers as well - look at all the happy customers!

See You this Weekend!

MORGAN
Highland
2014
Chardonnay

Santa Lucia Highlands

We are pleased to offer you one of our Favorite Chardonnay!
The grapes were hand picked and sorted in the vineyard. Whole cluster pressing preserved the fruit flavors and natural acidity. Barrel fermented in 32% new French oak, along with a combination of one and two year old and neutral barrels. Partial malo-lactic fermentation ensured a creamy richness balanced by bright fruit acidity.

93 Points! The Wine Enthusiast

"An amazing wine for less than $30, this bottling by veteran Winemaker Dan Lee starts with tightly wound aromas of dried yogurt, Meyer lemon peel, honeysuckle and Asian-pear flesh. Great grapefruit-pith flavors kick off the sip, where lime juice and baking soda combine for a tight, bright, grippy, laser-focused and high-toned palate."

Our Thoughts on this wine.....

This focused, elegant Chardonnay’s aromas feature lemon, butter croissant, and summer squash. On the palate, the rich fruit flavors are complemented by a light touch graham cracker and salted butter caramel. Incredibly food-friendly, the 2015 Highland Chardonnay is a perfect match with cream-sauced pastas, roast chicken and pork, and seafood.

A bit about Morgan.........

With more than thirty years’ experience, Dan Lee and the Morgan label have been synonymous with artisan, vineyard-centric wines from the Santa Lucia Highlands and Monterey.
Coming from a small town in California’s Central Valley, Dan Morgan Lee had prepared initially for the study of veterinary medicine at the University of California, Davis.  It was late in his college career that he discovered enology satisfied his interest in both science and agriculture. Immediately enrolling in the graduate enology program, Dan completed his studies and was hired as winemaker at Jekel Winery in Monterey County.
After serving his apprenticeship at Jekel, Dan moved up the road to Durney Vineyard where he continued to make Monterey wines. While making wine full-time for Durney, Dan aspired to craft his own label.  It was at a meeting of the Monterey County Winegrowers Association that he shared his vision with a banker. In addition to becoming his business advisor, that banker would also become Dan"s wife.

In 1982, Dan and Donna Lee opened the doors of Morgan Winery. Their very first Monterey Chardonnay earned a Gold Medal at the LA County Fair and a Platinum Medal from Wine & Spirits Magazine. Since then, Morgan has become one of the Central Coast’s most recognized labels, earning “Winery of the Year” honors from Wine & Spirits in 1996 and from the San Francisco Chronicle in 2003. In 2005, Dan introduced a second label, Lee Family Farms – intended to provide a fun outlet for his exploration of “alternative” varietals.

Able to pick and choose fruit sources from around the state, Dan eventually turned more of his attention to the Santa Lucia Highlands and single vineyard releases.  Dan and Donna invested in their belief in the Highlands with the purchase of the Double L Vineyard in 1996. Today the Double L is one of the best known vineyards in California. Dan’s leadership and expertise in the district led to his being named the first Board President of the newly formed Santa Lucia Highlands’ winegrowers association in 2005.

The Wines!!

Mader Pinot Gris Alsace $20.99
On the nose this wine is pure, no botrytis notes, a mix of white flowers and peach, with a touch of smoke. The taste is elegant with little residual sugar (13 grams), and a welcome acidity. The length is beautiful. To drink or keep two more years.

Mader Pinot Blanc Alsace $17.99
Ripe aromas with some fresh fruity and floral notes. Totally dry, the taste reveals an unusual richness for a Pinot Blanc. The finish is refreshing, thanks to the acidity.

Mader Gewurztraminer Alsace $22.99
Very fragrant nose of flowers and peaches. The palate is full of delightful flavors of light honey and apricot. There is a hint of residual sugar. This wine pairs perfectly with Asian cuisine and strong cheeses.

Coeur de Terre Oregon Pinot Noir $27.99
Tasting Notes: The McMinnville AVA is known for its intense Pinot Noirs and earthy overtones, and this vintage lives up to these expectations. A bright red color lures you in with signature Coeur de Terre earthy aromatics, dried herbs followed by notes of plum, cherry, blueberry, and raspberry. The wine shows nice structure with fine tannins and round mouth feel.

Coeur de Terre Heritage Pinot Noir $40.99
this wine is bound to become a classic expression of Oregon Pinot Noir. It first impresses with a beautiful delicate shitake mushroom and wild cherry nose followed by Pacific NW forest floor aromas and spices. On the palate, the wine is deeply textured and presents itself with all the classic signatures of a cool vintage: minerality and earth. The finish is extremely long. It will age well over the next 7+ years.

The Wines!!

Closerie Saint Antoine Viognier, Champ du Carra $10.99
A recent edition that has quickly become a customer favorite! Nicely priced and easy to drink with the captivating aroma of the varietal without the overwhelming weight of some offerings.
Try it with lightly sauteed appetizers!

Closerie Saint Antoine Rose", Champ du Carra $9.99
New to the shelves! This is a light, but expressive Rose" that will make summer sipping very refreshing. Chill to your heart"s delight! You could even make some Rose" (ask Kate for the recipe)

Clua "Illusion", Celler Xavier $24.99
The wine has a bright yellow color with green highlights. The aroma of the Il·lusió is reminiscent of Mediterranean herbs (lavender and thyme), ripe white fruits (pear and white peach) with a touch of citrics. In the mouth it is full bodied and characteristically Mediterranean, the ageing on the lees giving the wine additional volume. The clay soils give a hint of minerality together with the acidity which should give the wine the potential to age and further develop in the bottle for some months to years. This wine captivates through its delicate fruits, harmony and distinctive character.

Los Frailes Monastrell/Garnacha, Organic $14.99
An expressive nose of plum and fruit, with a slight background of mint that gives freshness.
The attack on the palate is soft, almost sweet.
The wine caresses the palate and then come the woody and smoky notes of barrel aging.

Critical Acclaim Robert Parker 90pts
The Wine Advocate - "The 2013 Los Frailes Monastrell-Garnacha (Tintorera), aka Alicante Bouschet, is a 70/30 blend fermented separately in stainless steel vats and matured for four months in used barriques and a further ten months in cement vats. The nose shows good intensity and certain elegance a mixture of red berries, some fennel, Mediterranean herbs and spices. The palate is medium-bodied, with very fine tannins, clean, delineated flavors and good freshness. A very good Mediterranean blend at a great price."

Finca Valldosera Tinto $16.99
Mix of Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Syrah provides color intensity, balsamic hints and a very pleasant tannin to the palate. The Merlot provides freshness and aroma of red fruits. Lastly, the Cabernet Sauvignon gives structure and complexity to this wine.

The Beerman.......

Tons of new beers in this week from our favorite people at 12% Imports! Perfect beers for this hot weather, they"ll quench your thirst while giving you tons of flavor!
Here"s a few highlights of what we got in: -
Dave

As always, check us out on Facebook   for a more detailed list (and photos!).  - Dave

Stillwater Shoegaze Farmhouse IPA: This might be my new favorite from Stillwater! "Right at the outset, some of the fruity dry-hopping makes itself clear: kumquat flesh, some lime pith, sweet orange zest, and grassy bitterness for days (while falling well short of astringent). After that, the yeast strain really comes out more: green grape skins, crushed grape seed, a bit of Bosc pear flesh, and underripe nectarine mix and mingle with soft wheat boule, unsalted oyster crackers, and uncooked rolled oats. Right now, this is striking a wonderful balance between yeast phenols, malt, and dry-hopping. As the drink goes on, it opens up a bit and the interplay between sweet fruit tones and dry, grainy malt comes forward, while the pithy bitterness of the hops and the funky yeast phenols settle in toward the back of the palate. The finish is dry, with a pleasant, soft, lingering bitterness. "

Against the Grain Pile of Face IPA:
Another winner from AtG! "Piles of Face pours a golden orange color with a mild hoppy haze. A creamy white foam builds on top the ale while aromas of branch ripe tangerine, tropical fruit and mild herb waft about the nose. Succulent in taste, moderate caramel, honey and floral flavors greet the tongue with radiant brightness. Its sweetness slowly retreats and its hop integrity builds. Bold citrus flavors turn from a succulent, nearly creamsicle taste and toward a bitter, peely, pithy taste to close. Mango, apricot and cantaloupe become part of the ester and hop profile that continues the beer"s bright and savory taste. Mild herbal flavor trail with grassy, tea-like elements to close. Medium bodied and finishing with a hop tilt, the taste of hops far outweigh its bitterness as the resinous pine-like bite narrowly edges out the linger of caramel malt sweetness. Crisp, clean and refreshing, the beer more aligns with modern day American pale ale rather than IPA."

Blackberry Farms Boundary Tree Farmhouse Ale:
No Ratings Yet! "Pours a ligthly hazy orange amber with a two finger off-white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of grainy malt, apple, light citrus, hints of hay and caramel. Flavor is husky grainy malt, hay, apple, pepper, grassy hops, hint of lemon. Finishes with pepper and grassy hops. Medium bodied with sharp carbonation. The Hallertau hops blend well well with the grainy malt to create a great rustic feel to this farmhouse ale. Nice spicy body with light fruit notes, mosty a hay/dried field plant body, which seems perfect for the style. The Citra hops are not as clear in the flavor with only a light lemony flavor in the background. One of the few hopped versions of this style I"ve had, and although I think I like the unhopped ones a little better, I think the continental hops seem to fit this quite well. Another interesting, flavorful farmhouse style ale from Blackberry Farm. I"m impressed by this brewery."

Hardywood Peach Tripel:
91 points in Style from RateBeer! "Pours turbid, bright golden with 1-finger, frothy white head. Nose is complex, a (Rebecca) Medley of hopcitrus, funky yeast, florals, peach, apricot. Tastes fruity, with peach and mango notes, florals, hopcitrus, yeast, mild funk, late tartness, white pepper, and more fruit and tartness as it warms. This one is incredible."

Council Brewing Co. & Adroit Theory Liminal Spaces Barrel-Aged Biere de Garde:

Collaboration with Adroit Theory Brewing Company from Purcellville, VA
Liminal Spaces is a collaboration beer brewed with Adroit Theory Brewing Co from Purceville, VA. We utilized a saccharomyces strain harvested in from honey suckle flowers in Purceville. We primary fermented the beer with this strain, then pitched Council’s house brettanomyces and lactobacillus cultures then transferred to the barrels that previously held Fun with Mangos. We left the mangoes in the barrel and aged the beer on them to provide a light fruity complexity to this beer.
